Please answer 7 of the following questions (your choice):

1. Describe the three-stage model of memory: the storage units and the processes that are involved (i.e., encoding, storage, retrieval) for getting information through this model. What is the duration and capacity of each storage unit? In what form is information stored in each unit?

2. Define the three parts of working memory, and explain the role that they might play in everyday problem-solving.

3. Define the different types or forms of long-term memory and the types of information stored in each.

4. What is procedural memory? What are some ways in which it can be measured?

5. How is factual (declarative) information represented and organized in long term memory?

6. There are various techniques (e.g., chunking, organizing information into hierarchies) we can use to help improve our memory. Describe 4 different classes of these techniques and which type of memory the technique is trying to improve.

7. Ebbinghaus (1885) examined how effective maintenance rehearsal was for memory. Describe his findings concerning the forgetting curve.

8. The serial position effect, the distinction between massed vs. distributed practice, and the concept of levels of processing are important findings in memory research. Describe how each of these phenomena may affect our memory for events in the world.

9. Encoding specificity is an important concept in the retrieval of information from long term memory into short term memory. Describe this effect, and how we might apply it to improve our chances of retrieval.

10. Describe the 5 theories of forgetting.

11. Memory is a reconstructive process. When we encode information, we summarize and tie together new information with information already in LTM. When we retrieve information, we also reconstruct the previously constructed memories. The misinformation effect is one construction error that is often committed by people. Explain this effect, and how it might relate to eyewitness testimony. 

12. What are some of the brain structures involved in memory? Describe each of their functions.

13. What are some forms of injury or illness that can affect our memory? What types of memory does each type of injury affect?
