• The length 5 paragraphs with 7 to 9 sentences for each paragraph. Use the body paragraph guide below to help add length.
• Use 3 sources, one for each body paragraph, as your support.
• The citation page should be part of your essay and on the last page, as a separate page, including the header and with the title “Works Cited.”
• Sources should be from your Everyone’s an Author textbook articles, the possible resources list in Module 3, and/or the Lone Star College library databases only.
• Make sure each source has an author or credible institution; if not, do not use that source.
• Use MLA format throughout the essay, including Times New Roman, size 12 font, double spacing, and 1-inch margins.
• All parenthetical or in-text citation needs a corresponding entry on your Works Cited page.
• Each quote, paraphrase, or summary needs in text citation and a corresponding entry on the Works Cited page.
• Avoid pronouns.
• List an author’s first and last name the first time you mention that author. After that, you can refer to the author by her/his last name, but not just the first name.
• I recommend a three-point thesis.
• Make sure your thesis is one complete sentence at the end of your introductory paragraph.
• I recommend you use at least one quote for each body paragraph, no long quotes (four complete lines or more).
• As a guide, the commentary about each quote, paraphrase, or summary needs to be about as long to 1.5 times as long as the original. A quote of two lines needs about two to three lines of commentary.
• Make sure your topic sentences correspond to the point(s) in your thesis.
• Be sure to introduce each quote, paraphrase, and/or summary.
• Use only third person for this essay. That means do not use I, me, my, us, our, you, yours, and so on.
Remember to support your points.
1. Quoting when using an expert opinion or a definition that cannot be rewritten any other way.
2. Paraphrasing is putting each idea from a section into your own words and sentence structure.
3. Summarizing is putting the most important ideas from a section into your own words and sentence structure.
Suggested Body Paragraph Guide
o Each paragraph should be balanced in length, so all your paragraphs should be roughly the same size—7 to 9 sentences is my recommendation and will be required for the research paper
o Suggested body paragraph guide:
? Transition + topic sentence (The topic sentences is like a mini thesis with that one point in it from the thesis statement but be sure to use different wording.
? Define any terms (Using your own ideas and definition, not using a dictionary definition, but your ideas.
? Introduce your quote/paraphrase/summary (According to Dr. Smith…).
? Quote/paraphrase/summary with in-text (parenthetical) citation.
? Explain the quote/paraphrase/summary in your own words and ideas.
? Tell how or why this quote/paraphrase/summary supports your point.
? Close your paragraph by referring back to the point in your topic sentence. (Be aware of word choice and avoid repetition.)
o Notice that all of it would be your own words and ideas, except the source material.
o Cited material should not be more than roughly 10% of the paper.
