Pardo, ARTHI 141MH: The Americas on Display Assignment # 2: Displaying Identities This is the second of three assignments that you will write for this course, each of which will demonstrate your engagement with the course content and your critical thinking about the history and display of modern and contemporary art from the Americas. For Assignment #2: Displaying Identities, you will analyze one exhibition review (or critical text about a museum display) that we have read in class and that discusses––through the lens of gender, nationality, race, or class––the identities of a Latin American artist and/or the identities displayed in their paintings. For this assignment, select and introduce one of the artworks listed below that we have studied in weeks 4–6 and describe how it displays specific identities. Introduce the exhibition review (or critical text) that discusses the display of your selected painting and, based on this exhibition review, discuss the strengths and shortcomings of contextualizing this work of art based on the gender, national, race, or class identities of the artist and the subject of their work. Your written assignment should include an introduction, related body paragraphs, and a conclusion. It should include the identification of the artwork (artist’s name, artwork’s title, and creation date) and a detailed visual description of it. Include as well the identification of the exhibition venue (location, institution, exhibition, year, etc.) featured in the accompanying exhibition review (or critical text). Use your powers of observation, analysis, and clear writing to propose an original, convincing argument about the effects of displaying and discussing your chosen artwork according to the specific identities of the artist and their painting subject.
