1)Listen to this soundfile first: Stanley Myers - Theme song from the movie The Deer Hunter

2)Listen to this soundfile second: Zosha Di Castri: Tachitipo

Many composers write with the awareness of the audience because they like their music to be accessible and to be understood by the general public. But others gravitate toward more experimental and abstract ways of composing which sometimes makes their music difficult to listen to or to market.

TOPIC:  After listening to the two sound files above, discuss whether or not composers should write for the audience.

  1. What is the composer's responsibility?
  2. Is it to challenge the audience or to please, to ask questions or to answer?
  3. Is it limiting to the artists if they sacrifice their artistic visions in order to make their music accessible to the audience?
  4. If the music is challenging and doesn't satisfy your preconceived notion of music, do you consider this problem of accessibility as a failure of a composer or as a failure of any supporting musical institutions ( schools, concert halls, radio stations and etc. ...) for not promoting and marketing this music to listeners? What do you think?
