Building an interactive GIS |
You already know from chapter 2 how to interact with a map document by zooming in and out,
panning, using the Identify tool, and using other tools such as the Magnifier tool. A map .
document intended for interactive use, however, can have additional enhancements, and that's
what this tutorial is about. For example, sometimes what you would like to see is highly
detailed and cannot be viewed when at full extent, but must be viewed when zoomed in.
ArcGIS provides visible scale ranges for map layers for this case, so depending on how far .
zoomed in or out you are, you see different layers. In addition, you need to learn more about
labeling features; about a tool called map tips; and about turning map features, such as z
points, into hyperlinks to websites or files. Finally, to make data clear to the map user, you a
need to clean up attribute tables, hiding attributes of no use to the person viewing the map,
and assigning self-documenting alias names to useful attributes. Note that you need an
