In your essay, you will lay out your reasons for choosing that place. Some of your reasons will be personal. Explaining your reasons will require some biographical information (nothing too personal, just general information). You will also provide some information about the place itself, which will require you to do some research and include references. Along with the personal and general information that you will provide, you'll also explain the features and qualities that attract you to your chosen place. Specifically, you must convince us that the place offers you the best chance of achieving the life you want. To do that, you'll first need to decide your priorities and explain your vision of the good life. I have compiled the following list of considerations, all of which can be components of the good life. Which of the following do you value the most? The least? How would you rank all the others? 1) Health and wellness 2) Family 3) Career/Education 4) Adventure 5) Wealth or economic security 6) Civic engagement and participation in government 7) Faith and spirituality 8) The natural world 9) The arts 10) Heritage and history 11) Scientific and technological advancements 12) Community 13) Freedom 14) Hobbies and personal pursuits 15) Personal commitments or promises Once you decide your top priorities, you will want to give some thought to the form each of the above could take. For instance, if you value health and wellness above all else, you might wish to live in a place known for its pristine air and water. Or perhaps you would choose a place that allows you to bicycle everywhere. Or maybe you chose a place that offers guaranteed universal health care. If you value community above all else, you might choose a place designed to encourage neighborly relations, or you might chose the place where you already know people. If you value technological advancement, you might choose Estonia. You must have three reasons for choosing a place. The place you chose should feature three of the components of the good life from the list above. You can also add a fourth reason if the place lacks something you wish to avoid, that you dislike, or else has very little of something you prefer not to live around. If you hate cold weather, for instance, it will be difficult to convince us that you should move to Minnesota. A fourth reason is not required. Remember, you must convince us that your chosen town or city is best suited to the good life you envision. This last part is tricky because it's easy to confuse "familiar" with "good." It is easy, for instance, for Californians to believe that California is the center of the universe. To ensure that you consider places beyond those you already know, this assignment has two constraints: ? You cannot choose a place in California. I know! California is amazing. And it cannot be the topic of your final project. ? You must provide appropriate evidence for the statements you advance. This means deciding where to develop your argument with facts and where to use interpretive claims and value claims. It also means incorporating research and references that support each type of claim. Think about this assignment as an exercise in pairing statements with corresponding evidence. You want to find the right evidence to support each claim. As you draft this final essay, keep in mind that it's not enough to claim that a place has the qualities and features that you want. The place has to have better, more notable, or more significant versions of those qualities and features than other places. Of course, “better,” “notable,” and “significant” are value terms that can be defined in different ways. So, you can be creative about how you develop your argument. Your final draft should be 1,250 words + a works cited page formatted to a style of your choosing (APA style). The final draft should include at least six references. Other Requirements 1. A statement that includes a value claim. 2. A statement that makes an interpretive claim. 3. A statement of fact that provides granular or close-up details about one specific subject. 4. A statement of fact that provides aggregated data such as survey responses or the results of an election 5. A statement of fact that provides autobiographical details. 6. A statement written in the first person. 7. A statement written in the passive voice. Your arrangement and placement of these sentences must make sense within the context of your final project. Since your project must consist of more than just one of each kind of statement, you will need to give some thought to which statements you use where and why. Your choices should be guided by what you want your readers to see.
