The final paper should be 6-8 double-spaced pages and provide a synthesis of the instructional materials from any one of the modules

Sociology

The final paper should be 6-8 double-spaced pages and provide a synthesis of the instructional materials from any one of the modules. In developing your synthesis you should draw on the learning objectives found at the beginning of each module to help you frame your essay. The goal of the essay is to demonstrate that you understood the materials and themes of one of the Modules. You do not need to write an original research paper. You do need to find a way to take the material from the course content and synthesize it. Summarize the major themes of the module, discuss how the sources (video and readings) contribute to your understanding and discuss relationships between them. You can treat the parts of the module as separate topics or you can try to integrate them. For example, if you write on Module 3 about Sustainability, you can write your essay with one section on the automobile and another on food. Or you can use sustainability as your theme and interweave material from both to talk about sustainability. You can also draw in material from other modules in the course but you should connect it to the themes of the module you are discussing in your essay. Instructions for writing a synthetic essay. To synthesize means to form a single whole by putting separate pieces together. Writing a synthetic essay means putting the pieces of information from several sources together to build an argument about the topic. A synthetic essay should not only summarize major themes from the sources, but also explain the relationships between them. You can take one of two approaches to writing your synthetic essay, which are described below. Explanatory Synthesis. The explanatory synthesis helps a reader to understand a topic. The purpose in writing an explanatory essay is not to argue a particular point, but rather to present the facts in a reasonably objective manner. The explanatory synthesis does not go much beyond what is obvious from a careful reading of the sources. Argument Synthesis. In the argument synthesis you present your own point of view. However, you must support this argument with relevant facts, drawn from sources, and presented in a logical manner. This kind of essay makes an argument about which reasonable people could disagree. Another person using the same source materials could conceive of and support another, opposite thesis.
