Although some arguments by certain scholars show that smoking can relieve stress, there are numerous effects of smoking especially psychologically, healthy wise and socially. Smoking is known to have harmful substances (nicotine) known to be not only harmful but addictive. Study shows that nicotine being a product of tar can be harmful to lungs leading to future illnesses like cancer or other respiratory diseases. There are various ways that smoking is viewed to be a way of coping with stress; one of the ways of coping with stress is the ability of nicotine to provide a sense of temporary relaxation (Weiten, 2021).

The temporary relaxation is what causes the addiction making people daily smokers especially those who feel depressed due to lack of jobs or any other necessity. Since the feeling is known to increase cravings of smoking makes the individual have a mentality that without the drug, there cannot be any other mode of relaxation. The company of fellow smokers can be a socializing factor that makes these kinds of people find peace and avoid any kind of stress. Smoking might be a habit started maybe from college or any other way to socialize with friends and could be argued to be a way of coping with stress as a way of interaction (Weiten, 2021).

Stages of Smoking

The non-smoker who tries is categorized as social smokers who represent a minor subset of people like those who smoke only in meetings or parties. The behavior changes to an occasional smoker from a non-smoker. These kinds of smokers are called anxious smokers since the temporal relaxation experience could be needed upon the report of feeling less stress. Daily smokers become the third stage leading to addictiveness (Weiten, 2021). The last stage where the smoker is said to be addictive and the study recommends such individuals to consult a physician on how to end the behavior.

Smoking is one way of drug abuse, through a certain study that shows the habit can be encouraged as a way of building self-esteem shows some validity by how youths smoke to feel like part of the society (Weiten, 2021).

Smoking is legal in most countries especially cigarette smoking while other kinds of smoking could be banned due to certain legislation. The argument behind allowing some nations to allow the habit is how smoking is argued to be a passion to some people. In nations or states where other kinds of smoking habits are illegal, cigarette smoking becomes an alternative. A cigarette is not considered to affect judgment much when in comparison to someone who has smoked bhang. The United States is a good example; some states have completely banned the use of weed either by smoking or use by any means due to the above argument. According to a study, smoking can be essential for individuals in need of weight loss. When smoking reaches the third stage discussed, evidence has shown that individuals start to lose weight, and to regain the norm quitting becomes the left solution (Weiten, 2021).

Smoking can relieve stress but reaching the addictive stage can make the individuals fail to manage finances as expected. In some countries, cigarettes have been made expensive to reduce the number of smokers through the increase of tariffs but still, people do smoke. Failure to manage finances becomes one of the disadvantages of smoking. The other disadvantage is how smoking can cause ill-related issues like cancer or other respiratory complications like asthma and bronchitis. As the adage goes, health is wealth, when health deteriorates makes even close family members and friends to be effected through the provision of the required medical bill (Weiten, 2021).

Gaining weight can be an issue while smoking since a low appetite for food is evident during the additive stage. Weight gain becomes only possible upon quitting smoking. The unpleasant smell on clothes becomes another problem of smoking and can be easy to distinguish between a smoker and a non-smoker. When smoking is associated with possible illnesses, depicts that how significant loss of life expectancy among smokers is. These effects are underrated by many with the view that could be some myths and misconceptions. The color of the teeth may turn brown or cause other effects like decay in the long run (Weiten, 2021). Time is valuable when used effectively, unlike in smoking where plenty of precious time is a waste.
