Game: Pandemic (board game)

The purpose of this project is to analyze a group experience based on the concepts you have learned in this class. Therefore, as a group you will play a modified version of the game Pandemic. The purpose of this is to have an experience as an executive team, you will be playing the part of the executive team for the Center for Disease Control in an attempt to save the world from 4 diseases. This means that you should “hire” 4 employees in the game and have them perform their jobs to save the world, otherwise you will follow the game as per the instructions.

• An Explanation of Your Initial Experience (MISBAH)– This is your actual account of what happened: Did you save the world? What were your other goals, did you accomplish them? How were decisions made? What was said and by who? Did one person dominate the conversation or did you have different leaders at different times?

· Did you save the world?

· Yes we did

· What were your other goals?

· Stop the disease from spreading, curing the disease, not getting an epidemic or outbreak

· Did you accomplish them?

· Yes we did cure the disease, some outbreaks, 3 epidemics

· How were decisions made?

· Decisions were made as a group. We all decided what move the player should take and what steps we could take afterwards to stop the disease from spreading.

· What was said by who?

· Particular about what players cards to  chose in the beginning like researcher or scientist

· Deciding whether a certain move can spread the disease

· Did one person dominate the conversation?

· Not one person dominated the conversation, everyone worked together

· Did you have different leaders at different times?

No we just worked together. Made our decisions together on what move to do when. We planned ahead.

· Building Theory based on Class Concepts – Pull in concepts from the class, do these help to explain what happened? Can you learn more about your experience based on these theories and concepts? One concept from class is not enough for this part of the paper, you should be using many aspects of what you’ve learned. Citations from class and the course text are only the baseline of what you may refer to here. What did the group learn about the group? ?2 PEOPLE?What did individual members learn about themselves? What did you learn about organizations?

• The concept from the class, do these help to explain what happened? (ch8ppt)

o Team building

o Task Contribution

o Decision by unanimity

• Can you learn more about your experience based on these theories and concepts?

• What did the group learn about the group?

• What did individual members learn about themselves? (need for two different people)

• What did you learn about organizations?

· Additionally part of your grade will come from your Paper Quality – Is the paper well written, organized, and interesting? Does it sound professional? Does it have a clear focus? Have you done a good job of combining voices making this a team effort, or does it look like you each wrote a separate part? Did you follow all of the guidelines? Is it well-organized? Are your citations in the proper format?

the title of the assignment, the date, and page numbers. It should also be written in 12-point font, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins. Any references (,e.g. a bibliographic list of sources) citations (e.g. identifying in the text of your paper the source of an idea other than your own), footnotes and endnotes should follow American Psychological Association (APA) formatting rules (http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/ resource/560/01/).

Modified rules for Pandemic: Follow the setup rules, except for step 4. In step 4 you will instead hire a team, you may choose any 4 team members based on their resume (see skills on their role cards). Bring all of your employees to headquarters in Atlanta and then proceed to the second paragraph of part 4’s instructions. Your team may decide in what order your employees have turns but may not switch turn order after it has been established. Each “player turn” is now an employee turn, your team will decide what jobs they must complete for you (thankfully, your employees have no motivation issues and will do exactly as you tell them). Tips for Success

· If you are unclear about how to write a reflection paper see these suggestions for experiential reflection by Trent University: https://www.trentu.ca/academicskills/documents/ReflectiveWriting.pdf.

· This paper is about your experiences and your learning, you should feel free to use the first person (I and we) but make sure to distinguish between what your group did or thought (we) and what individual members did and thought (First Names).

· Your reflection should not just be about what happened, but about what you think happened, why you think that way, why you think it occurred, and how you are going to use this information going forward. Make sure to apply class concepts to this and then draw conclusions (aka make a plan for experimentation). Critically evaluate everything you did based on everything you have learned in this class. You probably will not report on everything you did, focus on the events that helped the group learn.

· It is okay if your team loses (your team does not save the world), the point of this is to reflect on the experience and learn from it. I want to see this learning in your paper. This should give you a chance to think about what you did, what your group did, and how it did or did not lead to success.

· Remember this paper needs to show what you have learned from this class. Make sure that you tie in class materials and show that you are able to analyze what happened based on these materials.

· If you are unsure about any part of this project, ask me! I am happy to provide feedback to your group at any time throughout your work on this project.
