Information system refers to a sociotechnical, formal system integrated into the organization's management to collect, process, store, and assist in internally and externally information distribution. The changing technology has pushed business organizations to incorporate information systems in their operations (Texas A & M, University, 2021).  Some of the concepts in the information system comprising; Software, hardware, database, people, and network. Hardware refers to the tangible devices and equipment in a computer system such as the mouse and interface. The hardware helps in functions such as processing, input, secondary storage, and output.  Software in the information system refers to a collection of guidelines that direct a computer to work, for example, the Microsoft word. Another component in the information system is the database, and it refers to software designed to establish databases, manage, search, store and retrieve information contained in a computer. The network in the information system helps linking files to multiple owner files and vice versa.

Due to the changing technology, the importance of information systems has rapidly increased. Information systems play a vital role in how businesses conduct their activities internally and externally. Information systems' functions in business corporations comprise; information storage, easier decision-making, and assist in behavioral change (Cakmak, 2016 Page 1). An information system is quite essential when storing communication records, documents, and operational data. The system also helps in a faster decision-making process by availing and assembling the necessary information on time and helps calculate crucial indicators such as sales, profits, and costs (East Cost Polytechnic Institute University, 2021). The managers use the information to come up with the necessary decision quickly. Facilitating faster communication among employees and other stakeholders through emails is another role of the information system. Examples of information systems comprise; transaction processing systems, office automation systems, and management information systems. A transaction processing system refers to a combination of software that helps a business in carrying out transactions. Office automation system plays a significant role in boosting clerical work productivity and improving communication in an institution. Automating processes in an organization reduces time spent on clerical tasks such as creating reports and preparing and organizing customer data (Kelly Connct, 2021). The system also speeds up the retrieval process, reduces storage time and provides a platform for employees to access data simultaneously.  In contrast, a management information system helps in monitoring and managing production activities in an institution.
