The speaker in the first video is Ursula Von Der Leyen, the European Commission President, who talks about the efforts to make Europe the first carbon-neutral continent by 2050 by transitioning to clean energy and reinventing infrastructure. The goal seems complicated considering the increased forest fires, melting glaciers, and other extreme events, suggesting that many countries have yet to accept the complete transition to clean energy. Nonetheless, I think Ursula makes a valid point since the European Commission comprises 27 countries that have taken conscious steps to reduce their carbon footprint. Though Ursula’s European Green Deal seems ambitious and unattainable, the gradual steps countries should take can lead to a carbon-neutral continent by 2050. Therefore, I think the idea of having the European Commission perform 50 actions by 2050 allows them to plant trees, recycle waste and engage in other environmentally friendly activities.  The European Green Dean cannot be deterred by issues like the Coronavirus Pandemic, as evidenced by the goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030. I believe the European Green Deal’s objectives are achievable with the commitment of the relevant countries, and this change could also be adopted by other continents and ultimately save the planet.

The second video features Eric Garcetti, the mayor of Los Angeles and chair of C40 Cities, a network that handles climate issues.  I agree with Garcetti that the climate crisis is not restricted to boundaries, and it can be felt across the globe, but people can still promote green jobs, abolishing the use of fossil fuels and reinventing infrastructure.  Thus, though human beings have engaged in destructive practices, the C40 and other places of the world can implement policies that will save the planet and make it habitable for future generations. Evidently, the climate change issues evidenced through global warming, melting glaciers, pollution leading to diseases, and forest fires have been a source of stress for young people who feel that the climate may not exist for long. Thus, the idea of establishing green industries, using electric vehicles, and restructuring buildings to make them greener are viable steps in reducing the carbon footprint. Therefore, I think Garcetti raises valid points on the steps they have taken to reduce the carbon footprint and ultimately create a sustainable, green, and more inclusive society despite the effects of the Covid-19  pandemic.
