The evidence on media consolidation proves that it has more negative effects than positive. It is for this reason that there have been several arguments against and for the idea. One of the strongest arguments is the argument against the concentration of ownership of media companies. It presents a lot of evidence, including the potential of changing content due to minimal competition and decreased quality. It is also associated with negative speech and jock programming, thus affecting local content. As such, this affects the citizens' trust in media (Offredo, 2004). The second argument is for evidence of harm. With stronger companies buying more media companies, small companies face significant barriers for entry that prevent them from progressing. Giving that much power to large companies is especially harmful as it influences public opinion. These arguments most compel me as they prove that there is a possibility of harming democracy. It goes against the media's purpose to illuminate public voices and give the public freedom of speech (Potter, 2021). Therefore, the arguments prove that media consolidation would cause more harm than good.
Political motives are also another argument that can be made for the number of media companies shrinking while the number of media properties they own grows because of selfish desires. For instance, during elections, candidates may be tempted to sway the public in their favor by manipulating media companies (Media Consolidation, 2015). For instance, during the last presidential bid in America, President Trump created distrust among American citizens in him and the media after attacking the media before his fans when they did not support his candidacy (Light, 2017). Also, he may have been involved in counseling regulations to promote media consolidation for selfish motives.
Additional evidence against media consolidation includes the public violation of rights and increased control. Media consolidation would facilitate the violation of rights by silencing the public's opinions and instead replace the original content. Additionally, their increased sense of control would create violence among the public since they would deny other media companies a fair chance. For instance, start-up media companies would not operate effectively, which would imply fewer opportunities for creativity and probably reduced job opportunities.
