Summary of the purpose, problem, and solution 5 Executive Summary Purpose There is a huge problem with children of all ages spending too much time on devices and not enough time being involved in physical activities. The purpose of this proposal is to help children and adults understand the dangers of too much screen time and to help prepare them to be successful in their future. The intended audience includes parents and those parents who are already aware of this issue. Psychologists, Doctors, and Therapists will educate parents and children and how much is too much screen time on devices. Parents who have already realized there is an issue will also provide some feedback. Problem Children who spend more than an average of four hours on technologies per day are more likely to experience medical problems such as obesity, than those who do not. They are putting their life at risk because they are too young and vulnerable to be aware of the dangers of the internet. Solution The proposed solution is to better manage the time limit that our children spend on technologies to keep them healthy and safe. Parents should make screen free times such as when eating, and when in their bedrooms and bedtime. Conclusion Parents need to encourage children to play outside and have face-to-face interactions with their peers. A parent should limit their screen time when they are with their children because a child picks up exactly what the parent is doing. It is important to address the issue of children spending too much time on technology and to educate all parents to better manage their children’s screen time to keep them safe and healthy. They are the world’s next generation after all. 6 Purpose Technological advancements have made individuals in the twenty-first century dependent on technology leading to a rapid increase in technology use in the population. The increased technology use is also evident in children who use the technology for various purposes. Critical concerns arise when unregulated technology is used in children, triggering negative implications concerning their physical, mental, social, and emotional health. Despite the need to be well-versed with the technology given the constant technological advancements, another critical issue is the negative influence on the children’s behavior. Reducing children's inundation in technology will mitigate its adverse effects and promote the positive aspects. Providing informative insights on the negative implications of technology will help create awareness among parents and educators, helping them reduce children’s exposure to technology. Problem Children account for a significant number of individuals who frequently use technology, and studies indicate their increased technology use has raised questions about the effects of increased screen time on the children’s social, health, mental, and emotional well-being. Conversely, a problem arises when technology use negatively influences the social and mental well-being of children (American Psychological Association, 2019). What is all this screen time doing to kids’ brains? Early data from a landmark National Institutes of Health (NIH) study that began in 2018 indicates that children who spent more than two hours a day on screen-time activities scored lower on language and thinking tests, and some children with more than seven hours a day of screen time experienced thinning of the brain’s cortex, the area of the brain related to critical thinking and reasoning. 7 “We’re not sure what this data means yet, but what we can hypothesize is that screens could inhibit certain aspects of a child’s development by narrowing their focus of interest and limiting their other means of exploration and learning,” says Dr. Jennifer F. Cross, attending pediatrician and a developmental and behavioral pediatrics expert at NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital. If young children spend most of their time engaging with an iPad, smartphone, or the television, all of which are highly entertaining, it can be hard to get them engaged in non-electronic activities, such as playing with toys to foster imagination and creativity, exploring outdoors, and playing with other children to develop appropriate social skills. Interacting almost exclusively with screens would be like working out only your arm muscles and nothing else. You would have really strong-arm muscles, but at the expense of overall fitness (NewYork-Presbyterian, n. d.). Furthermore, the increased screen time may expose children to age-inappropriate content influencing their thinking. The children may be cyberbullied by peers affecting their emotional health, and the minimal engagement in physical activities may result in health-related complications (Arriaga et al., 2016). Considering this, technology use among children becomes too much when it negatively influences children's social, emotional, mental, and physical well-being. When children become glued to the screen for too long, their brain development is hindered due to overexposure to simplified tasks accomplished by technology. Adults utilize technology for extended periods without raising any concerns. Conversely, given that children are still in their developmental stages in cognition, physiological and biological transformations, the social experience during growth and development is vital in complete development. Researchers argue that the children’s social interactions with their peers have changed in comparison to past studies in history. Other researchers present contradicting perspectives suggesting that children’s social interaction still maintains the same intensity and significance as the past social interactions. The only thing that has changed is the shift of social interactions from face-toface interactions to digital interactions (Laurie et al., 2019). Conversely social alliances and interactions develop social skills. When these interactions are solely digital- based, the development of these social 8 skills will be impacted. This situation presents challenges to parents who are torn between sanctioning independent exploration and supervising technology use among their children. Statistics indicate that overexposure to technology such as video games has more weightbearing consequences than exposure to violent films and internet videos. It involves virtual control of the characters and performing violent activities virtually. This aspect makes the video game interactions a significant promoter of violence when the individuals turn the concept into action. Overexposure to technology acts as a promoter of children's violent tendencies, which becomes an impacting issue when they become adults because they will become a violent menace in their community. Additionally, past studies indicate that too much exposure to technology affects children's attention span due to the frequent notification sounds that affect the children’s concentration ability (Fuller et al., 2017). Solution Limiting the screen-time will reduce the dependency on technology for entertainment prompting the children to seek other methods of entertainment, which will entail physical activity and social interaction. Taking children to social clubs, the YMCA, and other recreation sites for children and t their parents will help to promote more physical activities and social activities decreasing screen time. These sites can also help promote children’s social interactions and relationships as well as improve their health status due to engagement in physical activity. Furthermore, studies indicate that suitable family environments reduce engagement in technology use, for instance, playing violent games, reducing its influence on the children’s behavior. Good parenting ensures that there are limits to the interaction to prevent technological addiction and overdependence in children (Fikkers et al., 2018). Reduction of technological exposure can be accomplished by implementing household regulations that prohibit electronic use while eating or talking to a family member. This action will make the children more present during mealtimes, enhancing their relationship development with family members. Parents should implement flexible rules to accommodate the changing situations among children and the necessary technology use requirements, therefore reaching a common understanding of when to use and when not to use the technology. Another approach to limit overexposure to technology among children is through creating awareness. Children above the age of ten can comprehend the negative and positive effects of technology. Parents should inform the children of the intensity of too much screen time, enabling them to limit their technology use. This approach is more 9 effective since self-limiting will be long-lasting compared to the forced limiting of screen time. Conclusion Unregulated technology use in children triggers negative implications concerning their social, health, and mental well-being. Technology use among adults is unlimited, but the developmental nature of the children raises critical concern regarding their unlimited exposure to technology since it affects their cognitive and physiological development. Furthermore, overexposure to technology results in reduced attention span among children limiting their grasping of simple concepts (Wang & Barnard, 2004). Apart from that, researchers argue that the children’s social interactions with their peers have changed in comparison to past studies in history, affecting the development of social skills. Digital interactions affect the quality of social relationships. Considering this, technology has presented a challenge to parents who are caught between allowing independent exploration and supervising technology use. It is advisable to limit the screen time by implementing flexible regulations to accommodate the children’s changing needs. Informing the children of the negative implications of overexposure to technology will trigger self-limitation. Parents need to encourage children to play outside and have face-to-face interactions with their peers.
