Organizational Development Career

An organizational development career and role within a company entails planning, implementing, and administering development programs, training programs, and other structural changes to an organization. The career deals with driving an organization towards changes to their structure and operations and setting them up to improve their performance in various processes and operations, and the company as a whole. There are a variety of roles within organizational development such as an OD consultant, organizational psychologist,  OD specialist or OD manager. All these various roles in the same field serve the same goal of bringing change that will improve the performance and effectiveness of organizational processes.

Organizational development is a field I would consider as a career path. Organizational development deals with making and guiding change in an organization. I am intrigued by the chance of having a hand in bringing critical and lasting change to organizations, and making a positive and lasting impact on how they function, perform, their strategic goals, decision making and what they become in future. Organizational development is a unique field that unlike other fields which make use of existing organizational processes and methods, it focuses on improvement and ensuring changes made are a success. All these possibilities are made possible by organizational development and its unique study of the scientific methods of bringing change to and enhancing performance in an organization. Having a chance to use one’s skills, knowledge and talent to make a difference in the world is something I desire, and the organizational development field gives me an opportunity to make such difference through organizations.

The field of organizational development is also attractive as it offers me an opportunity to put my skills, talents and knowledge to practice. While other career paths may not offer me the chance to apply all my abilities, organizational development offers me this opportunity and opens a path for me to not only apply those abilities, but also improve on them. I see it as a career path where I would not waste my abilities or apply only part of them, I would make full use of them if I pursued organizational development.

In pursuing a career path in organizational development there are a variety of strengths that I believe I being to the table. These include; Management skills as an OD career will entail dealing with a variety of teams and groups of personnel across various departments in the organization as well as aligning their operations with the organization’s goals and targeted changes. Communication skills as the job will entail sharing information with various groups within the organization and maintaining a steady flow of information necessary to effect change. Analytical, evaluation and observation skills as OD is itself a science that will require the study and analysis of a variety of data in order to develop the most suitable strategies towards change for an organization and such analytical skills are crucial especially in today’s data driven world. Tech skills as the use of technology is a norm in almost every field, most especially OD which makes use a variety of software and analytical tools that require a tech survey person. I bring vision and perspective which are crucial in both understanding the current position of a company and the possible paths for change and improvement.

I believe organization development is a career path that fits my abilities and interests. It is an intriguing field that strives to effect change in organizations and opens an opportunity for visionaries such as myself to make a difference in the corporate world, while employing our skills and abilities to the fullest. I believe the abilities and skills I possess fit OD as a career path perfectly.
