Title: Marine Le Pen and the Populist Rise

 

Research Question What methods did Marine Le Pen use to gain national prominence in France on a populist platform?

Thesis: Marine Le Pen rose to prominence by toning down overt xenophobia rhetoric, shifting the conversation to Catholicism vs Islam, attacking US globalization policies or liberalism, blurring polarized differences and seeing herself as an agent of a nationalist awakening by the loss of a national cultural identity.

Objectives/Outline

1. How do populist parties present themselves?
   1. The Front national has experienced such an increase in popularity under the leadership since 2011 of Marine Le Pen that some commentators have suggested the FN is now politically mainstream and question the validity of continuing to represent the party as ideologically extreme.
2. What forms of nationalism did Marine Le Pen use to gain political traction in France?
   1. Kenneth Burke’s steps of scapegoating-explore how she used this method successfully
   2. Identify other scholarly methods of promoting nationalism or isolationism to rise to power and compare those to Le Pen’s rhetoric
3. How does the media frame populist parties?
   1. If I find enough research: How does the media frame women-led populist parties? Or campaigns with strong female candidates?
4. The Trump Comparison
   1. How do the tactics Marine Le Pen used/uses compare with President Donald Trump?
5. The way Le Pen uses Catholicism to explain secular France’s heritage and national identity.

 

Methodology

1. Analyze current scholarly work on the topic
2. Analyze speeches (in French) made my Marine Le Pen and compare to President Trump
3. Analyze TV (in French) interviews with Marine Le Pen about her campaign/political views
4. The primary source of material for the paper will be Inside the Mind of Marine Le Pen by Michel Eltchaninoff

Professor’s reply to proposal :

this outline makes good sense to me. Just a footnote: How is Zemmour screwing up Matine’s game? Or Macron’s. I never would have thought that somebody could outflank Le Pen on the right.

 

And of course, I would like to know critical a force this nationalism is in French politics. What are its prospect, if any? How will it impinge on the european project? The French invented modern nationalism. Are they inventing 2.0 as well?
