Irene Adler, a character in A Scandal in Bohemia adventure story of Sherlock Holmes, is a beautiful opera artist, an ex-lover of King of Bohemia, and whom the case revolves around. Through Holmes’ process of solving the case brought by King of Bohemia to repossess a photo from Adler that might ruin the king's marriage proposal to the Scandinavian princess, Irene is portrayed as a witty and kind individual.  Adler accepts Holmes, although a stranger to be brought into her house after he is hurt when protecting her from robbers, and single-handedly outwits the Kings and Holmes' strategies to recover the photo.

A scandal in Bohemia's story follows the classical formula of Sherlock Holmes as it introduces us to a hero or rather a detective, narrating the skills, reputation, and detection prowess of the hero and presents a case where the client seeks the detective's help. At the start of the short story, Watson, Holmes' sidekick, describes Sherlock's expertise in detection, outlining his sharpness to clues, observatory eye, and ability to solve cases abandoned by official authority and names a few of the successful investigations (Doyle, 2019). Later, the King of Bohemia is introduced, who brings an exciting investigation involving Irene Adler that requires absolute secrecy.

Unlike other Sherlock Holmes stories, A Scandal in Bohemia story strays away from the typical Holmes story as it features a woman, Irene Adler as a worthy opponent for Sherlock. In this short story, Irene is presented as an intelligent and cunning woman who manages to hide the object of interest; the photo, in plain sight, recognizes Holmes in his disguise and beats Holmes at his own game (Doyle, 2019). Irene is not portrayed as weak in this story, unlike how women in Holmes' stories are presented.
