            Social and emotional intelligence are inextricably linked. Edward Thorndike is credited with coining the term "social intelligence." Edward Thorndike's definition of social intelligence, according to Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman (2016), is "the capacity to comprehend and manage men and women, boys and girls, to behave intelligently in human connections." The capacity to identify and cope with one's own feelings as well as the feelings of others is referred to as emotional intelligence (EI). The capacity to efficiently carry out social interactions with other people and situations is referred to as social intelligence (SI) (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016).

            People with high SI are socially competent and do well in professions that require direct touch and conversation with others (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016). By exhibiting emotions and engaging with one another, social and emotional intelligence are linked to cultural variables. What we dress in various cultures is one way culture influences social intelligence. Distinct civilizations, for example, have different methods of clothing. "People communicate signals about themselves via their clothing, both consciously and unintentionally" (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016, pg. 513). When it comes to culture, another element to consider is facial expressions. Fear, surprise, anger, pleasure, contempt, and sorrow are universally recognized emotions.

2) An explanation about how you, as a social worker, might apply the concepts of emotional and/or social intelligence to the case of Andres.

            Andres is a 68-year-old married father, grandpa, and retired child psychiatrist who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and a brain tumor six years ago (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014). Andres was physically active before his illness, but now he needs more support and cannot be left alone.

            As a social worker, I may apply emotional and/or social intelligence principles to Andres' case by being self-aware and self-confident. It will be critical for Andre to acknowledge his situation and come to terms with his life-changing event. As a social professional, I would provide psychotherapy in this case. In addition to psychotherapy, I would employ talents that might help Andres. These abilities include dependability and flexibility. Andres' life has taken an unexpected turn, forcing him to learn how to adapt. Working with Andres as a social worker may be challenging, so I'd have to give him time to develop confidence in me. Psychotherapy with Andre can assist him in altering his behavior and overcoming his life-changing situation.

3) An explanation of how social workers, in general, might apply social and emotional intelligence to social work practice. (Include a specific example in the explanation.)

            In general, social workers use social and emotional intelligence in their job. Goleman discovered skills linked with good work performance, according to Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman (2016). Self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management are examples of these abilities. When using emotional intelligence, social workers demonstrate understanding and compassion for their clients. For example, when chatting with a client, we as social workers employ our active listening abilities. These is when we interact with our clients and demonstrate to them that we are listening and care about what they are going through.  Social workers that utilize social intelligence deal directly with clients and use communication skills.
