1) Nature versus nurture is a common topic of debate.

- In your opinion, why are nature and nurture often discussed as an either/or dynamic that puts one against the other?

- Imagine if the term was "nature and nurture." How does that reframe shift your perspective on this area of human development?

 

2) Review Table 6.4 on page 125 of your textbook.

- Select at least one strategy from each area of development (self-concept, self-control, and social relationships) that you could provide to parents. This means you would have a minimum of three strategies identified.

- For each strategy selected, please articulate why this strategy can be useful for the child's long-term development.

 

3) Routines are important for the development of early school age children.

- What types of routines are necessary at this stage?

- Why are these routines important for development?

- What are might parents struggle with keeping routines for their children?

- What can parents do to pursue a consistent routine in the face of those struggles?

 

4) Review Case Illustration 6.2 on page 131 of your textbook.

- What are Wesley's protective factors?

- The illustration offers a number of possible solutions for Wesley. What are your thoughts on the offered resolutions? Which resolutions would you suggest first and why?

 

5) Research websites, advertisements, and/or social media accounts for preschools in your area and select one to evaluate carefully.

6) Review Case Illustration 6.4 on page 138 of your textbook.

- Then, complete Guided Practice Exercise 6.4 on page 139 of your textbook using one of the behaviors Ella Claire is displaying.

- When developing the behavior modification plan, be sure to include and describe the following:

     - Clearly defined target behavior

     - Methods for collecting baseline data

     - Descriptions of possible antecedents and consequences

     - One research-based intervention strategy for this behavior (hint: a reference would be important here)

     - A method and plan for evaluating the effectiveness of the intervention
