1# Discussion: Audience and Approach
The post discussion instructions:
In one or two sentences, describe the problem your proposal will attempt to solve. Then, identify both an audience for a Top Down approach and an audience for a Bottom Up one. For each, describe why that audience should care about your issue, what power they have to fix your problem, and how you might compel them to listen to your proposal. In most cases, your answers to these prompts should vary widely from your Top Down audience to your Bottom up one.
Note that, while it can be helpful to continue with one of the audiences that you’ve chosen here, you are not obligated to stick to one of the audiences you describe here—this board is primarily for the purposes of encouraging you to consider a wide range of possible audiences.
The post discussion instructions:
Post a draft of your original data visualization as well as a copy of the original source material (this could be a textual quote or a visual, such as a chart or table, that you are redesigning). In your post, ask any questions or concerns you have about your data visualization. Describe the steps you've taken to represent the original data.
The post discussion instructions:
Find and upload an example of an infographic that catches your attention. Tell us where you found the infographic, who created it, who its audience is and what its central argument is.
The post discussion instructions:
This discussion asks you to practice evaluating sources for credibility and synthesizing source material.
First, find one source that you will use for your proposal. In 3-4 sentences summarize the source by: (1) introducing the text; (2) identifying where it was published; and (3) establishing why this source is credible or relevant to your work.
Second, using the same source, identify a paragraph or sentence in it that supports one of the claims you would like to make in your proposal. Copy the original and then paraphrase that paragraph or sentence.
The post discussion instructions:
For your post, reflect on how you convince yourself to make changes in your life. How do you get yourself to take action when you see a problem? Do the things that motivate you to take action differ from the reasons you use in your proposal to convince others to make changes? How and why?
Based on this reflection, what (if any) changes will you make to your proposal?
Post an example of a "bad" infographic or a "bad" data visualization, where the example's design is misleading or difficult to understand, or where the design is good, but the research and sources referenced are not. Explain the problems you see in the infographic.
