Directions
Law and legislation have played a significant role in the creation of and development of the field of special education. In special education knowledge of the historical events and legal aspects are essential for understanding current legal rights in special education. In this graphic organizer, you will identify and define several key legislation and case law cases that have shaped special education. As you complete the graphic organizer, please include in the Summary section how the legislation establishes or impacts IEPs, free and appropriate education (FAPE), least restrictive environment (LRE), appropriate evaluation, parent and teacher participation, procedural safeguards, confidentiality, transition services, and/or discipline. You will also define and identify the impact of various professional organizations.
The graphic organizer is to be completed individually or in small groups. Upon completion, the group or individual are to identify which laws they believe to be most influential to the field of special education. The data collected and the three laws selected as most influential will be shared in discussions.
