What do oceanographers/marine biologists do?
Once you have completed all of the content for the first few modules, you will have a good introduction to the importance of oceanography and how oceanographers are able to investigate the processes and organisms found in the ocean. The goal of this forum is for you to teach your fellow classmates a little about what opportunities are available to marine science majors and those who are interested in having a career that is somehow related to the oceans.
DIRECTIONS: In your own words, describe a SPECIFIC ocean-related career that interests you and address the following questions (in at least 200 words).
After doing some research, I think an area that would really peak my interest is trying out for a position in the Fish & Game Warden section and trying to essentially become a guarding force for the fishing and hunting areas near and around the ocean. A fish and game warden essentially is a protector of these century old sports, as there are rules that keep the sport not just alive, but thriving and enjoyable for others to partake and pick up at a whim. Another reason that they hold such high importance is that in addition to providing protection, they monitor the populations and prevent violations of these rules to help keep a healthy population of fish and game so that extinction becomes less of a possibility. Even further in their efforts, they keep certain areas are monitored for pollutants to be sure the fish in the area are not contaminated or exposed to chemicals and can indeed be used as food for people that fish that area. As this is a state supplied position and has some law enforcement duties, it is a job that I would be excited to learn about, however I don't believe my current experience in the apparel industry would help me much as a fish and game warden. I think as a student, it would behoove me to take criminal law classes to understand the different laws that would be applicable to this job, but would be even better to request a ride along from a current warden to understand exactly what the job takes. I'm fairly confident if I understand more of the duties and familiarize myself with law enforcement tactics that I could get this job, however I think my hinderance would be my boating experience, to which is about less than an hour of driving a boat.
