By now, you should have a firm understanding of the material presented in the textbook.  Write a 3 page analysis on the topic of social stratification that is found in a newspaper or magazine, and make sure the paper meets all of the criteria stated on this document.  This paper must be typed and submitted on Blackboard.

 

 

Find a recent newspaper or magazine article that illustrates an event or situation relating to social stratification that has occurred in the U.S. within the last couple of years (2016-2020).  The article must be from a major source, such as The Washington Post, The New York Times, Time Magazine, U.S. News & World Report, among others.  The article can be found online or in print.  Choose an article that focuses on groups of people in conflict with one another as a result of the inequality in the U.S. class system.  You may want to run the article by me first before proceeding with this assignment.  The objective of this assignment is to provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to apply sociological perspectives of social stratification to real-world situations.

 

I.    Background (1 page):

    1. Briefly describe the social stratification or situation presented in the article.
  2. When you describe the situation, do not plagiarize – describe in your own words!
  3. Make sure you include a well-developed thesis statement which informs the reader in one sentence what your paper is about.  The thesis should be placed at the end of the Background section.  Go to this link for assistance:

II.  Assessment (2 pages):  This is the core of your paper.  Make sure this section is very well-developed, well-organized, and well-written since your grade depends mainly on your sociological analysis of the article.

 

  1. Discuss why the social stratification or situation occurred by relating it to four sociological concepts/theories learned from any of the chapters in the textbook.  Remember that you do not need to explain the theories/concepts. You will be graded by how you apply the theories/concepts to the article you have selected.

Concepts/theories must be bolded or underlined in your paper, or they will not be counted in the quota.

 

  1. Discuss how the reality is presented by the author/reporter/media. Are there any unwritten cultural assumptions? Do those assumptions reflect ideologies? Do the ideologies support the status quo? What kind of status quo? Are there any biases in the media presentation? If so, what kind of biases? Try to read between the lines. Cultural assumptions are not written. 

 

Important: you are asked to analyze both the content of the article of your selection as well as how it is presented. Presentation usually reflects ideology and subtly power relations.    

 

  1. Include an engaging and stimulating conclusion paragraph that summarizes your paper.  Demonstrate evidence that you can make connections between all of the main ideas.

Make sure to include the URL of the article in your list of “Works Cited.”   

 

The paper should be logically organized in well-constructed paragraphs/sentences, have relevant content, and be easily understood.  There should be few or no errors in format, sentence structure, grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.  These errors should not hinder comprehension of your writing.

In article, the income data with political leader’s perspective will be reviewed comprehensively. Data shows that since the US Census Bureau began to track, the United States had the greatest income inequality. With the longest economic boom in the United States, the gap between both community poor and rich has extended to its peak level in five years. Although poverty and unemployment are at an all-time low in the United States, income inequality in the United States was at an all-time high before the census began, according to data released on Thursday, 2019. More than 50 years ago it is the most affluent coastal region for instance Washington DC, Connecticut, New York and California the poorest regions that is Louisiana as well as Puerto Rico. The article mentioned that Utah, Alaska and Iowa comes under the highest level of inequality. Despite being in the midst of the longest economic boom, inequality increased in 2017 between nine counties in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Kansas, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Texas and Virginia (Campos, 2020).

 

Guinea's coefficient measures the distribution of wealth among the population as a whole, where zero means absolute equality and 1 means absolute inequality. All wealth is concentrated in the family. This number has been growing steadily for decades. When the Census Bureau began investigating income inequality in 1967, the Gini coefficient was 0.397. In 2018, it increased to 0.455 (Campos, 2020). On the other hand, no European country achieved more than 0.38 last year. For more than a decade, the federal minimum wage was $ 7.25. Brielle Bryan, an associate professor of sociology at Rice University, said it was the main reason for the widening gap between rich and poor.

 

Brian said, "As long as the richest people see an increase in their wealth, inequality will increase." "An emerging economy means that people with higher incomes and capital can consistently achieve higher incomes." In many provinces, the long-term development of the wealthy, whose incomes are rising well above incomes, is being offset by recent economic advantages. Low-income people who have found work and are benefiting from the raise in their income. As per the latest data shown in the article, numerous households with an annual wage of up to $ 18,000 has decreased since 2016, and around $ 250,000 of household has increased up to 15% (Kuhn et al. 2020).

 

As the gap among the poor and the rich widened, the average household wages exceeded $ 65,000 for the first time described in the article. When inflation starts, it will be more or less the equivalent as it was twenty decades ago. Determined inequalities have become a major theme in the 2020 presidential election, with candidates for instance Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren introduced the property tax. Studies by economists advising Warren and Sanders show that Sanders proposed this week to tax very rich people up to 8%, or 43,500 over ten years. One hundred million dollars (Kuhn et al. 2020). "There should be no billionaires," Sanders tapped when the plan was announced. "We tax their assets and invest in employees." Brian said systemic inequality was at the top of the financial hierarchy that is mostly white. Compared to men with a 95% income, women earn about 68 cents. Brian said: "We don't have much sympathy for the CEO, but what's happening in the cutting-edge market is really a sign that the whole system is in trouble.”
