Discussion Question 1: Why is it important for ELL teachers to be thoughtful about the elements of language within ELL instruction?

With an understanding of how language is constructed, educators can develop and implement appropriate instruction that can develop a student’s emerging language. Elements of language including phonology, pitch, stress, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics are often overlooked and become seamless components of communication and conversation. With a firm understanding of these components, educators are better to support and promote the development of the English language. Because all languages consist of common universal features, students that have acquired one language can successfully acquire additional languages. Understanding the components of language and expression can assist students in making learning a new language a meaningful venture (Diaz-Rico, 2018).

Kaitlyn wrote: The reason it is crucial for ELL teachers to be thoughtful about the elements of langauge within their instruction is because some of these children may be at different levels of proficiency while trying to process the language and relate it to what they know to then translate it and complete the assignment.  It is pertinent as an ELL teacher to make sure to speak slowly and let the students try to comprehend what you are saying before expecting a quick answer.  There are so many elements of language, from phonics and the way they are used, vocabulary, reading fluency and reading comprehension.  The understanding that these students may be trying to learn this language for the first time is also key when trying to teach the English language to these students.  These factors all fit together and influence the next, for example, if a student "does not know the meaning of the word, there is no way to check if the word fits, or to make meaning from the sentence." (Antunez, pg 3.) Once the student understands the meaning of the word, it is easier for student to development the comprehension of that word, and so forth.  Research has shown that vocabulary development is one of the greatest challenges to reading instruction, so as educators we must work on all these key components to make sure our students are understanding all parts of English instruction to build academic success with our ELL learners.

 

Discussion Question 2: What is the difference between language learning and language acquisition? Provide examples to support your explanation.

As small children, individuals attain a fluent understanding of the complexities of language through observation and social interaction. Experts suggest that humans have an innate capacity to acquire language in order to communicate with fellow human beings. Gaining the ability to converse and communicate through such social and interactive means is defined as language acquisition. Conversely, language learning can be described as attempting to gain fluency in a language simply through listening, repeating phrases, learning grammatical rules and learning vocabulary that is detached from conversation and context. Language learning will not allow a speaker to communicate effectively with fluency. Social conversation and communication is the hallmark of attaining fluency in any language (Foppoli, n.d.).
