"The overuse of social media, including Facebook, can have a definite impact on teens' mental and emotional health" (Paul & Smith, 2011, p. 801). Social media brings detrimental effect on the mental health and socialization of the youth.

The increased use of social media has been linked to increased feelings of loneliness, isolation, and anxiety. A study by the University of Pennsylvania found that the more time people spend on Facebook, the worse they feel (Sherman, D., & Hartmann, T., 2016). The study found that people who use Facebook more than once an hour during the day were twice as likely to feel lonely as those who used it less often.

In addition, social media can have a negative impact on social skills and socialization. A study by the University of Chicago found that the use of social media is associated with a decrease in face-to-face interactions, which can lead to a decrease in social skills (Kraut, R., Kiesler, S., Boneva, B., Cummings, J., Helgeson, V., & Crawford, A., 2002).

The overuse of social media can have a negative impact on mental health and socialization. It is important to limit the amount of time spent on social media and to make sure that face-to-face interactions are still a part of your life.
