PHIL-1013-01 Reflection Essay No. 3 Topics

DUE DATE: End of Module 9 (see Dropbox for exact date)

VALUE: 15% of final mark

LENGTH: 600-800 words (11 or 12-point font)

Assignment Rational and Learning Goals:

Reflective Essay No.3 gives students the opportunity to pause and reflect on some the ideas and concepts that we have studied during Modules 8 and 9. Students will be able to examine the relationships between humour and ethics (Module 8) or religion (Module 9).

Please refer to the individual essay topics below. Please feel free to use examples from the assigned videos, or from extra readings. The main goal with reflective essays is to balance your own voice with the ideas discussed in the course materials. When discussing a particular issue or problem, please use the same language (i.e., terminology) that you encounter in the readings and the PowerPoint slides.

NOTE: Students reserve the right to (1) devise their own original essay topics, or (2) modify the essay topics described above. All I ask is that you e-mail me with your original or modified essay topic.

Your essay will be marked for how well you present the relevant course material you have chosen (i.e., the positions or ideas), as well as how persuasively you argue your conclusion. (Please see the Grading Criteria below for more information.)

Course Learning Outcomes (LOs) Addressed:

- Students will defend their position in a debate with reasoned, critical thinking.

- Students will communicate clearly, concisely and correctly in the written, spoken, or visual form that fulfills the purpose and meets the needs of the audience.

- Students will respond to written, spoken or visual messages in a manner that ensures effective communication.

Assignment Instructions:

Pause and reflect on only ONE of the following questions:

1. In social terms, is humour always a positive thing? List some of the good and bad things that might be associated with humour and laughter.

2. Can there ever be a case for censoring humour? If so, how would this work and how would censorship be enforced?

3. Howard Jacobson’s view is that jokes do not have opinions, and they undermine themselves as narratives: does this make you feel more comfortable about racist or sexist jokes? If so, why not?

4. Can you think of any objections that religions or religious people might have to humour?
