Scoring Criteria for the Nine Domains

Each of the nine content domains will be scored as noted below:

N/A = Not applicable or not enough information to evaluate

1 = No competence is evident, or some competence demonstrated, but general skills are not at the expected level for a student entering internship. Significant remediation is required. These concerns are outside the normal range seen in a student at this level of training.

= Competence is evident, however specific skills or knowledge fall below expectations for a student ready for internship. Some deficits from what would be expected at this stage in training, but these deficits are minor. General skills are at the level expected, however a specific skill or knowledge area was not demonstrated at the level expected for internship.

3 = Competence meets the expectations of a student ready for internship. Competence at the level expected for a trainee ready for internship.  Demonstrates familiarity and competence in familiar clinical situations and demonstrates beginning capacity to generalize skills to novel clinical and professional situations. Demonstrates good clinical, ethical, and professional judgment.  Beginning to perceive the bigger picture with clinical work, rather than individual aspects; has learned from experience what typical events to expect in a given situation and how plans need to be modified in response to these events. Trainee demonstrates developing self-awareness with regard to own competence and areas for growth.

4 = Competence meets the expectations of a student ready for internship with some specific areas that are well above what we would expect at this stage.  Demonstrates flexibility in generalizing skills across clinical situations, recognizing overall patterns, diagnoses, and/or treatment outcomes for a specific case.

= Competence consistently exceeds the expectations of a student ready for internship.  Trainee’s general skills are consistently exceptional, with regard to what is normally expected for a student entering internship.
