For this assignment, you will imagine yourself in the role of a teacher in an ECE setting. It is the beginning of the year, and you are asked to explain to the parents why free play is an important element in the curriculum for the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of young children. To do this, you will synthesize the material offered in this course which discusses the value of the play for the whole child’s development. You may think in terms of all types of free play or use just one area of free play such as art, blocks, outdoors, table toys, dramatic play and so on. Look to your notes, the assigned readings, and lecture slides to gather information.

Your Assignment should include the following criteria: 

• Your own personal philosophy on the value of play
• Reasons why free play supports physical, cognitive, emotional and social development
