Preparing for a Job Search

CREATING A RESUME AND COVER LETTER

  • Open the file SAM_WD19_1a_FirstLastName_1.docx, available for download from the SAM website.
  • Save the file as SAM_WD19_1a_FirstLastName_2.docx by changing the “1” to a “2”.
    • If you do not see the .docx file extension in the Save As dialog box, do not type it. The program will add the file extension for you automatically.
  • To complete this SAM Project, you will also need to download and save the following data files from the SAM website onto your computer:
    • Support_SAM_WD19_1a_Letter.docx
  • With the file SAM_WD19_1a_FirstLastName_2.docx still open, ensure that your first and last name is displayed in the footer.
    • If the footer does not display your name, delete the file and download a new copy from the SAM website.
  • PROJECT STEPS
  1. After earning an Associate's degrees at the Central Florida Technical College, you are ready to apply for positions in hotel management. You have already prepared a draft of a resume and cover letter to send to your ideal employer. Now you need to complete the document. Begin by changing the document margins to Normal.
  2. Change the page orientation to Portrait.
  3. Change the theme colors to Blue Green.
  4. Insert a rectangle at the top of the first page, and then format it as follows:
    1. Change the height to 0.53" and change the width to 6.5".
    2. Change the position of the rectangle using the Position in Top Center with Square Text Wrapping option.
    3. Change the text wrapping to Top and Bottom.
    4. Apply the Moderate Effect – Aqua, Accent 1 shape style.
  5. Add text to the rectangle and then format it as follows:
    1. Type Nicole Rawlings in the rectangle.
    2. Increase the size of the text to 22 point.
    3. Apply the Fill: White; Outline: Blue-Gray, Accent color 5; Shadow WordArt style to the text.
  6. On the blank line below the rectangle, enter the following text:
    8751 Pickett Way, Sandals, FL 31524 (727) 555-4512 nrawlings@cengage.net
  7. Insert a dot symbol between the zip code "31524" and the area code "(727)". Insert a second dot symbol between the phone number ("555-4512") and "nrawlings". Insert spaces as necessary so that one space appears before and after each dot symbol. (Hint: Use Symbol character code 183.)
  8. Change the font color of the address line to White, Background 1, Darker 50% (1st column, 6th row of the Theme Colors palette), and then center the paragraph.
  9. Insert a bottom paragraph border below the address line, using default settings.
  10. Insert a new blank paragraph below the address line, apply the No Spacing style to the paragraph, and then enter the following text:
    November 5, 2020
  11. Insert a new blank paragraph below the date line, and then insert all the text from the file Support_SAM_WD19_1a_Letter.docx.
  12. On the last blank line on page one, enter and format text as follows:
    1. Type Sincerely, as the complimentary close.
    2. Insert three blank lines to make room for the signature.
    3. Insert another paragraph, and then type Nicole Rawlings
    4. Insert another paragraph, and then type Enclosures
    5. Insert another paragraph, and then type Resume
  13. In the table on page two, format the text in the left column as follows:
    1. Align the text using the Align Top Right option.
    2. Change the color of the text to Aqua, Accent 1, Darker 25% (5th column, 5th row in the Theme Colors palette).
  14. Insert a new row in the table as follows:
    1. Insert a new first row.
    2. Merge the cells in the new row.
    3. Apply the No Spacing style to the cell.
    4. Set a right tab stop at the 6.5" mark on the ruler.
    5. Enter and align text as shown in Figure 1. (Hint: Press Ctrl+Tab to insert a tab character in a cell.)

* Figure 1: Text for the new first row in the table

The text "Nicole Rawlines is entered and left aligned in the first cell of the new table. Immediately following, a tab is inserted, and the text "(727) 555-4512" is entered. Because of the inserted tab, the phone number is right-aligned.

On a second line within the same table cell, the text "8751 Pickett Way, Sandals, FL 31524" is entered and left aligned. Immediately following, a tab is inserted, and the text "nrawlings@cengage.net" is entered. Because of the inserted tab, the email address is right-aligned.

  1. Apply the List Table 3 – Accent 1 style to the table.
  2. Change the height of the first row to 0.66", and then align the contents to the bottom center of the cell.
  3. Remove the bold from all the text in the first row except "Nicole Rawlings". Change the font size of the "Nicole Rawlings" text to 16 point.
  4. Check the Spelling & Grammar in the document to identify and correct any spelling errors. (Hint: You should find and correct at least 1 spelling error.)

Your document should look like the Final Figure on the following pages. Save your changes, close the document, and then exit Word. Follow the directions on the SAM website to submit your completed project.
