  1. What does copyright protect? What types of things can you do without seeking copyright permission? How do you prove your copyright has been infringed?
  2. What is a trademark? What does it protect? What happens if you infringe on a trademark?
  3. Know the details of Libel (who has protection and who doesn’t? what is the burden of proof?).
  4. What defenses can you use to counter libel suits?
  5. What is absolute privilege and qualified privilege? Who can claim them?
  6. Understand the four ways our right to privacy can be infringed.

Communication Theory (Theoretical Underpinnings: Adjustment and Adaptation)

Related reading: all of chapter 5 (This chapter of the text gets very complicated. Use your lecture notes as your primary study tool.)

  1. Identify the three types of communication (verbal, nonverbal, tactile) and the communication elements (Shannon/Weaver communication model).
  2. Understand the three different message delivery systems.
  3. Understand the agenda setting hypothesis
  4. Understand the Ecological Approach and all related terminology we discussed in class.
  5. Understand the Systems Perspective and all related terminology we discussed in class, including open and closed systems. How do these two approaches differ?

  1. Know the definition of communication (as opposed to dissemination) and its three goals, as well as the steps in the process of informing, persuading and instructing.

 

  1. Understand Individual Orientations and define salience, pertinence, attitudes and opinions.

  2. Be able to identify and explain the five characteristics of opinion.
  3. Understand communication behaviors: Active vs. passive.
  4. Be able to explain cognitive dissonance, selective perception and selective retention.

 

  1. Know the Coorientational Model and all related terms- pay close attention to this! It can be confusing. Can you identify the difference between “agreement” and “understanding?” What are we referring to when we talk about “congruency?”  If you can’t think of examples of each of the elements, you may not understand them well enough.

- Be able to describe the four states of consensus.

  1. Know the process public opinion leads to (media attention, laws, rules, etc.). What stage of the process is easiest for us to influence?

 

  1. Be able to identify the three forms or persuasion according to Aristotle.
  2. Understand the difference between persuasion and manipulation.
