Module 5: Overview & Outcomes

In this module, you venture into one of the most significant junctures of the criminal justice system – sentencing. It is here that you discover the five goals of contemporary sentencing, the evolution and nature of various types of sentencing, alternative sentencing, sentencing innovations, and the four contemporary sentencing options. Additionally, you study the role and importance of the pre-sentence investigation, the history of victims’ rights, and the victim’s emerging role in criminal justice proceedings today. Finally, you examine and analyze the arguments for and against capital punishment.

 

Module Outcomes

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Module Outcome 1: Describe the five goals of contemporary criminal sentencing. (CO3)
  • Module Outcome 2: Explain the nature and purpose of indeterminate sentencing, structured sentencing, and alternative sanctions. (CO3 and 5)
  • Module Outcome 3: Assess the nature and importance of the presentence investigation report. (CO3)
  • Module Outcome 4: Describe the history of victims’ rights and services and the growing role of the victim in criminal justice proceedings today. (CO3 and 5)
  • Module Outcome 5: Identify the four contemporary sentencing options, and analyze and evaluate the arguments for and against capital punishment. (CO3 and 5)

Course Outcomes

The course outcomes that will be addressed in this module are:

  • Course Outcome 3: Describe the various components – legislative, enforcement, judicial, and correctional - and their interactions within the criminal justice system.
  • Course Outcome 5: Explain and analyze at least one alternative theoretical basis for understanding specific types of crime, victimization, and criminal justice policy.
