CRITICAL RACE THEORY TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM

Background Information about why this is an important topic to be explored

CRT or Critical Race Theory is an important topic because a Bill in Critical Race Theory is about to pass in March of 2021 in California as a pilot for the school system's curriculum. Also, on January 12th San Diego County Supervisors passed a resolution declaring racism a public health issue. They also passed support actions for the county to address systemic racism because the division that we face as a society is much influenced by governmental policies in place to perpetuate systemic racism. Therefore, The Critical Race Theory Bill might or might not be one of these policies or bills passed to perpetuate racism instead of disseminating the barriers of oppression to unfold equal opportunity for society. This topic needs to be explored further to reach some conclusions to see if implementing this bill in the school system will positively and proactively transform the relationship between race, power, and control under young children's perception.

Critical Race Theory is rooted in critical legal studies and feminism. Critical legal studies are the viewpoints of scholars ranging from disaffected liberalism to committed Marxism to utopian anarchism with the purpose to influence a radical change in liberal views (Hutchinson, A. 1989).

When it comes to critical legal studies, "The movement is too heterogeneous. Nor has critical legal writing typically derived its definition of liberalism from what liberal theorists themselves have said. Instead, critical legal analysis has often taken as its point of departure a statement of what might be called the core of liberalism, as framed by critical legal writers rather than liberals themselves." (Bauman, R., 2002).

CRT (Critical Race Theory) is a movement engaged in studying and transforming the relationships between race, racism, and power (Delgado, & Stefancic, 2017).

Apply the scientific method by identifying one or more appropriate research areas of psychology that your topic might align to that are described in Section 1.1 Does it fit into more than one? If so, which one is the closest fit and why?

The closest category that this topic fits into is Social Psychology because it is related to social behavior and how we interact with the world around us. This topic can also fit into developmental Psychology for its correlation between physical, cognitive, and social changes during the human life span and the influence of media, environment, or parental guidance (Newman, 2016). My research category is under real-world problems not just because it is relevant to today's issues and social issues but also because there is a bill ready to be presented and possibly passed in March. My big question is if implementing this course (CRT) in the school system curriculum will positively influence young children's perception towards race, racism, and power.

  • Introduction – Introduce the research topic, explain why it is important, and present your research question and/or hypothesis.
  • Literature Review – Summarize the current state of knowledge on your topic by citing the methods and findings of at least two previous research studies. State whether your proposed study is a replication of a previous study or a new approach using methods that have not been used before.
  • Methods
    • Design – Indicate whether your proposed study is qualitative or quantitative in approach. Select one of the research designs you have studied in the course, and indicate whether it is experimental or non-experimental. Evaluate why this design is appropriate for your research topic. Cite the textbook and one other source on research methodology to support your choice.
    • Participants – Identify the sampling strategy you would use to recruit participants for your study. Estimate the number of participants you would need and explain why your sampling method is appropriate for your research approach.
    • Procedure/Measures – Apply the scientific method by describing the steps you would use in carrying out your study. Indicate whether you will use any kind of test, questionnaire, or measurement instrument. Cite the source of any instruments to be used.
    • Data Analysis – Describe the statistical techniques (if quantitative) or the analysis procedure (if qualitative) you plan to use to analyze the data. Cite at least one source on the chosen analysis technique.
    • Ethical Issues – Analyze the impact of ethical concerns on your proposed study, such as confidentiality, deception, informed consent, potential harm to participants, conflict of interest, IRB approval, etc. Explain how you would address these concerns.
  • Conclusion – Briefly summarize the major points of your research plan and reiterate why your proposed study is needed.
