Assignment Description
This assignment immerses the student in a real-life situation that takes place in businesses that are trying to evolve/grow to the next level of professionalism. It clearly demonstrates the demands put on warehouse and distribution practitioners.
Students will develop an in-depth understanding of the impact of warehousing and distribution facility design and layout on the material flow, picking and storage systems, and throughput that can be handled by evolving organizations.
This individual assignment has several parts.
For this assignment, the student will be expected to:
1. Review various Handouts and a Production Facility Layout to gain an understanding of the manufacturing process.
2. Produce a revised Production Facility Layout using SmartDraw software (or handwritten), based on the actual dimensions of the building plus consideration of the additional square footage.
3. Consider any issues of concerns respecting machine layout, material handling equipment availability, storage system utilization, office space, etc.
4. Understand the impact an increase in business might have on inbound and outbound material flow.
5. Comprehend how the business volume and sales revenue are related.
Case Scenario
After accepting the Distribution Manager at Ooitech Solar Panel Inc., the Director of Operations has indicated that she would like you to consider expanding the existing plant facility from 50,000 sq. ft. to 75,000 sq. ft. Your new employer is a large international manufacturer of solar panels and the YE 2018 sales revenue was $50 million, with a projected sales growth of 10% annually for the next 3 years.
When you accepted the job, you were advised by the HR manager that you were selected due to your practical experience and knowledge of growing the business and expanding various building locations. Upon receipt of the company blueprints, you noticed that there were 3 offices; however, there were 4 in total. Looking at the date of the blueprints revealed that they were 5 years’ old and failed to depict the current work environment.
The Director of Operations advised that the major focus for the site expansion was to increase the floor footprint of the Finished Module Warehouse and Packaging area. Based on 2018 YE production figures, the plant produced 1,000 sets of solar panels and sold them at $50,000 USD per set. There are two solar panel production lines which can produce approximately 84 sets per month total or 42 sets per line.
Based on the blueprint provided, the measurements were found to be incorrect. Your predecessor was the last person who had the engineering drawing for the site and a new blueprint will need to be produced (using SmartDraw software) to reflect the present working environment plus the additional 25,000 square feet to be added as an extension of the finished goods warehouse space.
Outlined below are the approximate dimensions for the existing 50,000 sq. ft. building:
A building extension of 250 feet would be needed, adjacent to the Finished Module Warehouse & Storage area. Also, you would need to consider any wall teardowns, the inclusion of a shipping office, racking, staging and shipping areas, placement of first aid stations, fire exits, etc.
Assignment steps
1. Review handouts (Production Layout, Solar Panel Production Flow Chart, and Main Equipment) to acquire a good understanding of the manufacturing process and site layout for solar panel production.
2. Summarize five key facts of the case.
3. Referencing the projected forecast in sales, describe the impact this will have on incoming receipts of raw materials and the storage of finished goods.
4. Based on your knowledge of Warehouse Audits, Warehouse Receiving and Storage, Warehouse Picking, Distribution Management, and Warehouse Design and Layout, reconstruct a brand-new Production Facility Layout for Ooitech in hard copy format.
5. Describe what changes you have made to the site design and layout. Why? What are the benefits to the company?
6. How much sales revenue can Ooitech expect by YE2021? How many sets did they produce and ship in 2019, 2020, and 2021.
