Think of a person in your personal or work life who isn't a good listener

Communications May 23, 2021

Think of a person in your personal or work life who isn't a good listener. Describe this person's poor listening behavior and give an example that shows this person's poor listening skills. What are some barriers to effective listening that you know are a factor for this person? What suggestions would you make to help him or her listen more effectively?

Expert Solution

Answer:

My colleague at office, who often engages in conversation with me is not a good listener. He talks with me and then when i start talking he doesn't show much interest in what i am saying and often looks here and there especially when there is some noise or if some person walks by, he looks at them and also does not maintain eye contact with me while listening. Another thing which is very annoying is that instead of listening effectively to me, he keeps thinking to himself what he is going to say and even before i complete my sentence he interrupts and starts talking. Some of the barriers to effective listening for this person are that he gets distracted easily by noise or other people walking, he interrupts even before the other person has completed his sentence, he does not maintain eye contact and he doesn't show interest in what the other person is saying. Some of the suggestions would be to maintain eye contact while listening, show interest in other person when he is talking, do not keep thinking what you are saying until the other person has finished what he is saying and do not interrupt the person while speaking.
