Question 1

Not yet graded / 2.5 pts

For the following questions, you will be required to imagine yourself as a K-12 teacher or principal.  Each question will present you with a scenario involving student misconduct (i.e., a student misbehaved).  In your response, describe what you think is the appropriate course of action in each scenario.  In other words, what should you, as the teacher or principal, do in this situation?

Scenario 1: Alexa Gonzalez

You are a middle school teacher in Queens, New York.  Alexa Gonzalez is a 12-year old girl and a student in your sixth-grade class.  During class, Alexa wrote on her desk in permanent marker.  She wrote two things: “I love my friends Abby and Faith” and “Lexi was here. 2/1/10” followed by a smiley face.  You catch Alexa writing on her desk.  Since she has damaged school property, you feel that you need to do something to address what Alexa has done.

What is the appropriate course of action?

Scenario 2: Cedrico Green

Cedrio Green is 14 years old and in the 8th grade, living in Mississippi.  You are a teacher in one of his classes.  Cedrico is on parole after having served some time in juvenile detention.  As a condition of his parole, he must abide by all school rules.  If he disobeys a rule, he could be sent back to juvenile detention.  Although you are supposed to report any misconduct, teachers and administrators do have some discretion on whether or not to report Cedrico to his parole officer.  Cedrico has done a few things since returning to school that  go against school rules.  One day, for example, he arrived to class a few minutes late.  Today, Cedrico violated dress code.  He is wearing the wrong color socks.  You now have to make the decision whether or not to report Cedrico to his parole officer.  He will get sent back to juvenile detention if you do.

What course of action do you think is appropriate here?

Scenario 3: Kiera Wilmot

Kiera Wilmot is a 17-year old student at a high school in Florida.  You are the principal of this high school.  Kiera is a very bright student, and is known among teachers and students for being very intellectually curious.  She has plans to attend college, and has demonstrated a strong interest in the sciences.  She has never been in trouble with the school.  A science fair is coming up, and Kiera wants to participate.  She decides to run an experiment on school grounds to prepare for the science fair.  Kiera arrives to school early and conducts her experiment outside before classes start.  She takes a piece of aluminum foil and puts it in a plastic water bottle containing toilet bowl cleaner.  The water bottle expands and explodes, producing a loud booming noise and a small amount of smoke.  There was no damage done to any property and no one was hurt.  However, students and faculty (including yourself) who happened to be outside at the time were startled by the noise.  The noise startled Kiera as well.

As the principal, you decide that you need to address Kiera’s actions in some way.  What is the appropriate course of action?
