What is the purpose of a negative control group?
In an experiment, you must have a treatment group in which a particular variable is applied, and a negative control which is treated exactly the same way except that the treatment is absent. Without the negative control, you cannot compare differences between the two groups. Only the comparison will be able to tell you what differences the treatment is responsible for.
