6.4 Discussion - Sample Arguments

Objective:

  • Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of a sample written argument paper

Instructions:

Write a one-paragraph evaluation of ONE sample argument.

A) Sample RA 1 docx

B) Sample RA 2 docx.

Use the following questions as a guide for your evaluation, but feel free to choose 2-3 elements and focus on them.

1. What is the claim and what are the reasons for the claim?

2. Is the reasoning logical? Are there any logical fallacies?

3. Does each reason have enough support?

4. Does the student use sources ethically? Do the sources build up the ethos of the paper? Do the sources cross-reference (there is a Works Cited entry for each source mentioned in the paper, and, vice versa, all sources on the Works Cited page can be found in the paper).

5. Is it a classic/adversarial/traditional or Rogerian/consensual argument?

6. How does the student treat the opposing position?

7. Do you find conclusion satisfying?

8. Are you a friendly, hostile, skeptical or disinterested reader of this argument?

9. Are you convinced by the student's argumentation?

10. What do you find especially successful in the student's argumentation or approach?

11. What can be improved?

In Sample RA 2 it discusses the controversy of getting a degree and why you should choose carefully. With the education inflation and less jobs available in each career field it is hard to believe that getting a degree is better than not having one. Also, a larger group of minorities are more likely to collect debt and drop out than their white classmates. The author points out how people need to understand how to take advantage of all opportunities. These opportunities are college degrees and the risk that are being taken to get them. When the author is discussing the choice to get a degree or not, he/she makes a valid point. When choosing a major you should research its return value in the field. “An engineer major has an average return value of 21%, whereas a liberal arts major has a return value of only 12%” (Professor) In order to be successful in your career you must have a job in your career. To put it in perspective, think to yourself how many engineers we need compared to art teachers. There is not enough sufficient employment for graduates going into the liberal arts major.
