In the argument chapter, you learned about expressed arguments (overt arguments attempting to persuade the audience towards a point of view) and implied arguments (arguments that appear on the surface not to be arguments but actually seek to persuade the audience of a point of view or views). For this DQ, provide a specific example from the media of an expressed argument and an implied argument and answer the following questions:
Note: You may use visual arguments such as photos and pictures, but you will still need to explain your rationale for why you believe the author is making a specific argument.

I chose to write my expressive portion on whether or not cell phones are harmful to our health. People are caught always checking their cell phones for messages, alerts, or calls even when they have not been notified by their phone of such. This addiction is unknowingly destroying our health. Cell phone use at night can hinder your sleep. It could also spread infection if you use your phone in hospitals, restrooms, or other public places. Sleeping near a small screen or even sleeping with a television in your room is associated with shorter sleep duration (Falbe et al., 2015). I believe that cell phones have caused people to not remember how to communicate in person. They would much rather text someone than call them.
My implied argument that I have chosen to write about is gun control. I've heard this argument often; access to guns needs to be restricted by the government because access to guns is the most convincing variable that determines murder rates in our society. If this argument were true, we would see a large surge in gun ownership to slow down the murder rate. On the Fox News website, there is an article titled "Media portrayal of gun ownership is inaccurate and biased", this article goes on to say that "TV networks have used their primetime entertainment shows to portray gun rights advocates as dishonest, and unconcerned about the loss of innocent lives", (Lott, 2018). Gun control seems to become more of a problem when mass shootings occur. I think that media coverage of the public policy issue of gun control needs to be restructured. Gun control must be a continuous debate that contains arguments from both sides, in order to preserve the reputation of the United States of America.
Both expressive and implied arguments are important to know about because they are such topic starters. I will be able to use both of these to write my first essay by extensive research on our first topic. Articles are written on it by many different people with different views of the same topic. Making it easy to find resources and citations to use.
