Can you think of patient characteristics or traits that might suggest that this type of therapy is a good match for the patient? From researching Existential Psychotherapy, it seems as though it is a practical form of psychotherapy. It seems as though existential psychotherapy gets to the heart of things and wants to move past the superficial dealings within society and the individual. It includes death, loss, meaningfulness, and freedom. It mentions that these ideas are not obstacles but they are a part of life. The therapy emphasizes accepting reality through empowerment. In other words, the client tells them self “This has happened to me so let me take it and feel it and release it.” I don’t believe it can explain all types but it seems to share an undertone with other psychopathology. I believe that every form of therapy seems to confront or empower or both. Existential psychotherapy seems to require more personal and deep interactions especially since it acknowledges loss and death in any way. Characteristics that a patient would have in order to undergo this type of therapy would be deep-rooted loss or even severe mental health issues. This kind of therapy would even work for people who are in prison.
