Readings/Videos: “From Between the World and Me,” Ta-Nehisi Coates “From Educated,” Tara Westover “Scholarship Boy,” Richard Rodriguez “Volar,” Judith Ortiz Cofer Topic: Our authors have written inspiring pieces about home, family, language, gender, and education. In the excerpts from their memoirs, Coates, Rodriguez, and Westover all share a glimpse into their education journeys in the form of literacy narratives. Cofer writes a moving story of family, superheroes, fairy tales, and villains. Writing task/Research: In a thesis-driven essay, please answer the following prompt: Choose one author (Coates, Rodriguez, or Westover) and write a claim describing their thesis regarding any of the suggested areas listed under “Topic” or another area of your choice. Prove this thesis by using quotations from their work to support your ideas using any of our four tools. You may also include Cofer in support of your claim. Grading Rubric: Essay #2 will be further expanded into Essay #3.
