Title: How does the double meaning of the title help us to understand the central idea in the story?

Theme: Possible subjects in Turtle Island: Native Identity, Native Culture, Childhood, Crime (drugs), Innocence etc. How can we take one of those subjects and turn it into a statement of theme? In your post, state the theme of the story.

Character: Describe how the narrator in Turtle Island changes throughout the story.

Characterization: A reader gets to know a character by considering:

  • what a characters says about him/herself
  • what a character says about others
  • what others say about a character

Using the narrator of "Turtle Island", consider these three questions above. Are there any differences between how the narrator sees himself and how the reader sees him?

Conflict: How does the story connect the narrator's external and internal conflicts together so that they are presented as one unified story?

Resolution: What happens to the narrator in "Turtle Island" at the end? Do the police shoot him? Why did Joseph Boyden (the author) not give the reader a clear ending?

Irony: Identify a moment of verbal irony in "Turtle Island". Hint: consider some of the things the narrator says about himself, and/or consider what the narrator says about Wolf. What is ironic about the ending of the story? How does this moment help to heighten the tension of the story?

Symbolism: After reading the original Native legend about Turtle Island, consider the symbolic meaning of Frances' pet turtle, Island. Why has Joseph Boyden referenced the legend in the story? How does it help the reader understand the theme of the need to preserve Native identity and culture?

Answer:

Title: The title of the story "Turtle Island" helps the reader to understand what is the story all about means when they immediately read the title they will know that it is about turtles.

Theme: The theme of the story are combination of native culture, native identity and childhood.

Character: The character of the story are Auntie Wanda which is strict auntie of Francis and Posse is the 11 years old aboriginal boy that is playful and loves to seek in their house.

Conflicts: The author used to describes about the environment problems in the story and how it affects the character.

Resolution: The turtle named Island keep breathing but he is lacking of water because Posse tried to put him inside his jacket pocket. While Posse was talking to his turtle Island, the police was behind his back and looking for the other boy in the surrounding so he was very nervous and tried to hide. The end of the story he felt relief because he thought that Island was going to die at that moment. The police never shoot Posse in the story.

Ironic: When Posse was felt nervous and shows empathy to his turtle he was also in danger because of the police patron in their area.

Symbolism: After reading the story of Turtle Island it shows that we need to follow the rules of our relatives so that we will not be in danger. Consider also the feelings of the animals. I think Joseph Boyden was showing this is legend story because it helps how to communicate and care for other living things in our world.

Step-by-step explanation

Based on the story of what I've read it is all about the turtle island is about showing the native identity of Indians during ancient time. How they handle children in their hometown. It has great lesson for young children that they need to listen to their parents or any older relatives in their houses to avoid being in danger situation. It also values living things in our world.
