Please help me write a reply essay for the two questions number 1 and 2 below for a scholarship application for dental school

Writing

Please help me write a reply essay for the two questions number 1 and 2 below for a scholarship application for dental school. I am accepted at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. I have written a story about my background and experiences. I have also attached my resume in a separate file. Please let me know if I can provide any additional details for the making of these essays.

I did not include my volunteer experiences nor my dental shadowing experiences in my resume, but they are as follow:

*Stow mission of central Ohio (a free dental clinic in Columbus) 02/01/2023-current: As a volunteer dental assistant, I work alongside compassionate dentists and dental students to serve patients in underserved communities. Treatment here was provided at no cost to these patients. I assist with equipment sterilization and instrument preparation for patients. I am also the chairside assistant with the volunteer dentist and dental student where I help with extractions, and fillings. I have had the opportunity to work with different dentists, learn about the dental profession from them, as well as learn about the journey of dental students.

* Food Pantry Assistant (Mid-Ohio food bank) total of 50 hours: During the coronavirus pandemic, many families lost their jobs and struggled to fulfill their basic needs, so I felt the need to offer assistance in this critical period. Thus, I volunteered at local food pantries through the Mid-Ohio Food Bank, where I packaged foods and distributed packages to people in need. I mainly volunteered in food pantries in Columbus. Ultimately, I learned that catastrophes can be devastating on families that were already struggling, but a united community can help alleviate some of that stress.

*I shadowed 5 dentists, I can provide more information if needed.

My story:

I was born in Bethlehem, Palestine and I grew up in Hebron, Palestine. I grew up in a large family, I am the youngest among 7 girls and 2 boys. My family valued education a lot and saw that getting a good education is very important. Most of my siblings completed a bachelor’s degrees and so from young ages my family motivated me to love school and to like reading and studying. I excelled in all before college education and as well as in my college education, I graduated with a 3.7 GPA.

Growing up in Palestine was not easy and I didn’t realize that until I moved to live in the US after finishing my high school. There are limited resources in so many areas of life. Limited access to quality healthcare, limited resources for schools (no heating or cooling system in all public schools, no busing so we had to walk to school, not many opportunities to get engaged in clubs or enrich our learning experiences with science experiments for example, and many more obstacles). Resources for communities where also limited in term of poor road constructions, very limited public spaces or parks, and water shortage during summer seasons. We faced brutal restriction of movement due to checkpoints and the separation wall. And many more challenges brought to our life by the brutal occupation of Palestine.

During my high school, I had the chance to participate in the Arab Reading Challenge initiated by the UAE Vice President and Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, twice. This challenge required me to read, analyze, and summarize 50 books each year I participated.  This experience not only enriched my academic skills and gave me broader understanding of diverse topics but also played a crucial role in shaping clear goals for my post-school education. I can’t say that this experience was a pivotal in my education and personal experiences, but it was an important stone in many stones. Among the many challenges that we faced, access to quality health care was the most prominent one. My sister had an accident, and she was later moved to the US to get necessary physical therapy that was not offered in my home country.

And so, immersing myself in books helped me explore myself and helped me refine my goals for the future and reflect on my aspiration. I read about different careers and pathways while also reading about teens stories who suffered major health issues. Also, the local news was always vibrant with stories about people who are facing serious health challenges and need help. I decided that I want a career that will have a direct positive impact on people’s life worldwide. Through reading I found that access to quality healthcare is a worldwide issue that face tremendous communities.  I wanted a career that will improve people’s health and make their life easier. I wanted to have the skill and the knowledge to truly transform someone’s life to the better and elevate their discomfort and pain.

To achieve my goals, and as dual-national student, I moved to the US, where my father and some of my siblings work and live, to get my post school education. I majored in biology with the intention to explore the different health care fields and I found my passion in dentistry after having the opportunity to shadow many dentists in my community. I realized that oral health issues ranging from carries that might steal someone’s sleepy nights, to gum disease, to unfixed smile and many more are major health problems that affect the health and well being of many people especially people facing financial hardships. I believe my experiences, both in Palestine and the United States, have equipped me with a unique perspective on healthcare disparities and made me more determined to make a positive impact.

My unique background and the challenges I endured growing up, have prepared me to contribute something unique to The Ohio State University. I bring with me a unique perspective, resilience, and a determination to contribute meaningfully to the university community and beyond.

My story in the US started after high school. I moved to Columbus, Ohio where some of my siblings were living. Having family around, helped me get adjusted to my new home but it was the first time where I felt that I had to be completely responsible and independent. The experience of moving to a new place and having to navigate my way around unfamiliar places, having to find ways to form new connections with new people, and exploring new ways to build new experiences to hone my skills and my competences was challenging yet fulfilling. I started my educational experiences in a community college a place where you truly get to see peers from so many different backgrounds. In a single class, I had the privilege to form friendships and connect with people from different places worldwide and learned from them that each one of us is unique in their perspective, but we all complement each other, I learned how hard it can be to continue your education while supporting a family from students with children, I learned that some students financial hardships can get in the way of having a pleasant balanced college day but they value their education more and they are willing to scarify many restful hours to work and earn a living after school. It was not long after I decided to be a Peer Advocate as a part time position. Working as a peer advocate helped me connect more deeply with my peers and be a more impactful in their lives. I connected them with resources to help them handle financial hardships, I listened patiently to their stories that mostly involved stress and exhaustion from handling many responsibilities, I empowered them with ways to manage their times and overcome learning challenges and many more. That role was pivotal in establishing strong connection with my college peers and the community around me. It taught me how to handle issues and work to find solution for them, it taught me how to be a leader and positively impact the lives of people I encounter. Then I moved to The Ohio State University to continue by biology degree and get more opportunities to leverage my education and skills. In the lively vibrant campus of the University, I found joy in many things including research. I joined a research lab with an interest to learn the actual application of the science I was learning in my lecture halls. Getting involved in research helped me improve my manual dexterity and analytical skills. I grew deeper appreciation for the scientific process it takes to get us the scientific advancement that we see in all areas especially healthcare related areas. While holding a position as a research assistant, I decided to be a teacher assistant. Being responsible to independently teach and lead a weekly biology lab of more than 20 students was an experience that honed my leadership skills, my mentoring skills, and my ability to effectively convey the knowledge I know. While research was a big part of time during undergraduate where I had to assist with experiments or present my finding, I was very happy to be able to volunteer in food pantries and a free dental clinic for people in need in my community. The small conversations and connections that I had whenever I loaded someone’s car with food, was very heart touching and made me more determined to get the means to improve the lives of people I encounter. The more time I spent at the free dental clinic the more enthusiastic I became to get my dental education and be a dentist so to one day be able to volunteer as a dentist and increase access to healthcare for people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

I aspire to be the best dentist that I possibly can be. I aspire to be able to one day hold a free dental clinic or be part of one. I plan to deliverer dental care to my patients that is tailored to their needs. I plan to approach my patients with compassion and sympathy and always make improving their health my top one priority. I plan to increase awareness of worldwide health issue facing impoverished communities and encourage colleague, leaders, and community members to collaborate to make a leverage some of the burdens these communities face. My plan to achieve these goal is through being very commitment when it comes to my education, leverage my education with rich extracurricular activities like volunteer and research, and most importantly by keeping my persistent and determination to getting the skills necessary to positively impact my community and bridge healthcare gaps. I will utilize my second language and previous experiences with people from disadvantaged backgrounds to make access to oral health care at the college clinics easer. I plan to utilize the same skills to spread important information about oral care and educate the community through outreach programs like community seminars and workshops. I hope to encourage my peers to get involved in free dental clinics during and after graduation.

Receiving the scholarship will help me be focused on my goals. It will give me the extra time to build my competencies to be more beneficial to my community. More importantly it will help me overcome financial challenges, leaving me more empowered to face other challenges that might face me.
