A gatekeeper is an educator who evaluates students to determine if they should be allowed to progress through and graduate from their preparation programs (Remley & Herlihy, 2020, p. 349) Another term for gatekeepers is supervisors. According to the ACA (2014) Code of Ethics, supervisors can recommend dismissal from training programs and credential processes if the supervisees cannot demonstrate competent professional services (F.6.b). It should be challenging for counselors-in-training to get dismissed if they study in their program and ask for help when needed. Asking for help is my biggest weakness. I struggle with asking for help because of past experiences. However, I want to ensure I can become the best counselor for my clients. To do that, I will ask several questions when I need help.

In addition to asking for help, counselors-in-training should go to counseling. If a counselor is not in the right mindset, their judgments and actions will not be the best. The ACA Code of Ethics (2014) states that supervisees may request counseling, and supervisors identify appropriate services (F.6.c). Every counselor-in-training should go to counseling, so there is someone to talk to who is unbiased and experienced. They can help with the counseling process but also help tackle any barriers or challenges that may arise.

I do have a concern regarding the process. As someone with Autism, social experiences are a bit slower for me to grasp. While I have spoken to several counselors, doctors, and psychologists about my concern, many have encouraged me to continue my path to becoming a counselor. Remley & Herlihy (2020) say that gatekeepers prevent incompetent or unprepared students from graduating (p. 348). Well, what defines competence in this field? I am incredibly prepared and have done well thus far, but how do I know what makes a "competent" counselor? If I make a mistake, does this mean I will automatically be kicked out of the program?
