The research paper is a chance for you to explore another culture by interviewing someone from another country. It is an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to understand and apply course concepts, theory and scholarly works (both from our course readings and sources you will find) in a meaningful way.

Basic Information:
Why did you come to this country and under what circumstances?
How old were you?
Who did you come here with?
You may want to ask about level of education, marital status, children, religion, and so forth.
Identifying Cultural Sameness/Difference
What were some of the major differences that you noticed when you first came here? Note: Both countries should be discussed (U.S. and his/her country). You may have to draw some conclusions yourself after the interview.
Language:
Did you experience any major communication problems - verbal or nonverbal (body language, etc.)?
Customs:
Are there any major differences in social institutions, such as education, healthcare, how men and women are viewed and treated, politics, family structure, etc.
Beliefs:
What are the biggest differences in people's views on cultures, religious, work and family etc..
Rituals:
Are there particular rituals that take place in your culture that do not here or vice versa?
Values:
What are the major differences in terms of family, friends, work, play, etc.?
Perceived Stereotypes:
What impressions/stereotypes did you have about this new culture before you arrived (get 3-5 at least)?
What are the biggest misconceptions that you believe most people in your culture have about this country and its people?
How did these impressions/stereotypes compare with your actual experience and impressions of this culture?
Is there anything you would warn/or advise someone else from your culture about if they were coming to this culture for the first time?
Reverse:
What are the biggest misconceptions that people in this country have about people in your country?
What could we do to change those misconceptions?
Racism/prejudice:
Did you feel that people here were prejudiced against you in any way?
Challenges in the Acculturation Process:
Review the articles by Sussman and Wang we read in week 7 and come up with a few (3-5) questions regarding psychological adjustments and difficulties associated with acculturation. Be sure to word sensitively.
What was the most difficult difference for you to adjust to?
What helped you to work through those difficulties?
If I Move to Your Country:
What would I have to change in order to adapt to life in your country (get 3-5 examples)
What would I need to do, consider, learn or become in order to have a very positive experience as I adapt to your country?
Note how long the person has lived here. If longer than 5 years, ask them to explain how their experience has changed over time.
