What You Need to Do: In this assignment, you will design, and critique visual representations of the dataset provided to you. These visual representations will serve as the primary user interface in the interactive system that you will develop in assignment 4. For this assignment though, do not worry about interaction, and focus on the visual representations. Your designs should help users who are interested in this dataset to find answers to the following questions:

1.            There are so many metrics, can I get a higher-level understanding of how these metrics are related to one another?

2.            For a given country (USA), how do the other countries/regions compare to it in terms of all the metrics?

3.            For a given metric (education as a percentage of GDP), how do different countries and regions perform?

For each question, create 3 different visualization designs, explain what each design encodes,  and write a critique summarizing the pros and cons of each design. In total, you should have 9 designs, 9 explanations, and 3 critiques.

You have the freedom to choose whatever tool you’d like to create the visualizations, provided that you are using real data (i.e., sketches or mockups without using real data are not acceptable). For each question, the three different visualization designs must use the same underlying data.

The visualizations do not need to have 100% fidelity (e.g., you don’t need to include every single country or every single metric). As long as the visualizations illustrate the core design ideas and encodings clearly, it is OK if only a subset of the data is used. However, you should be ready to explain how the final system can handle the complete data based on your designs. Do not make the visualizations interactive.

Grading Rubrics:

The three visualization designs are diverse (different encodings and visual styles): 1 x 3 = 3

The critiques for visualization designs are valid and thoughtful: 1 x 3 = 3

The visualization designs demonstrate understanding and application of techniques covered in the lectures and are not just basic charts (i.e. bar chart, scatter plot, and line graph): 1 x 3 = 3

Task2 : Use Data IllustrateurLinks to an external site., and  reporting bugs. The bugs must be reproducible: you need to write down the steps to reproduce the bug. Note that Data Illustrateur requires you to perform repeat, divide, and densify in this particular order; if you do divide and then repeat, and things don’t work, it doesn’t count as a bug.
