Assess the following settings by interpreting the effect each one has on Holden and how each one has impacted his life. (The dormitory, Pencey Prep, the hotel room, and the carousel.)

Guidelines to go over when writing the paper

(Over 600 + words but under 1,000)

1. Use Times New Roman and 12 - point font

2. Double-space

3. Indent paragraphs

4. Did you answer / respond to the question / prompt fully? – PROOFREAD!

5. Skip one line - Title Your Paper (underline - ?) The title should capture the reader’s interest.

6. Try Not to use the pronoun, “I” (I believe..., I feel..., I think..., etc.)

7. Try Not to use contractions (don’t, doesn’t, can’t, etc.)

8. Do Not abbr. (U.S., Devlin H.S., etc.)

9. Do Not begin a sentence with a conjunction (And, Because, But, etc.)

10. Do Not end a sentence with a preposition. (Where do you work at? Where is he going to?)

11. Do Not mix verb tenses. Use the same verb tense throughout your paper. (The main character is in her twenties and was superstitious.)

12. Do Not separate a proper noun at the end of a line and continue on the next line.

13. Do Not use (parentheses in your paper).

14. Use facts and provide evidence (cite your sources)

15. Try to not use (in the story, throughout the novel, the book said, in the class, etc.)

16. Always underline the title of the book.

17. NEVER use (thing, a lot, is when, was when, due to..., stuff, and any other “slang-type” words or expressions)

18. When referring to a character from the story, use the last name of the character – exceptions: Gatsby, Huck, Holden, Jem, Scout, etc.

19. Use these words correctly: their, there, (they are and not they’re), its, (it is and not it’s)

20. NEVER re-tell the story – answer / respond to the question / prompt – STAY ON THE TOPIC!

21. Avoid personal opinions

22. Clear thesis, evidence, summary / conclusion, - cite your source
