Color Theory / Color Assimilation (Post Impressionistic color use)

1) Select a color photograph from a magazine or download and print an image that’s at least 7.5 x 10”. The subject can be anything but try to choose an image that can be abstracted into larger shapes, (Avoid images with a lot of small details). Use tracing paper to trace the basic contours of the subjects in the photo. Include shapes that define shadows and plane changes. 2) On 8.5 x 11” Bristol Paper, use removable tape to protect 1/2” borders around the format. 3) Use the graphite paper transfer method to create cartoon of the shapes from your photograph onto the Bristol Paper. 4) Using acrylic paint and brushes, finish a version of your photographic subject that uses the Pointillist style to allow adjacent colors to mix optically to produce a third color that is perceived by the eye. The colors you create don’t have to match the photograph. Remember that placing complementary colors side by side in small amounts will produce a neutralized effect, whereas analogous colors, (like red next to yellow), will create a more saturated orange. Try to keep the colors you put side-by-side at similar values. It will prevent dark/light contrast from getting in the way of the effect.
