It is completely different to experience an actual building or work of art in person than simply seeing it illustrated in a textbook, photograph, or on the internet. Thus, an anonymous donor has offered to pay for your travel from Houston to visit and experience five works of art or buildings that we studied this semester in ARTS 1301 that you would like to see. However, you must now select those five works and submit a proposal for the donor to fund your travel. You must include one non-European work that we studied.

Step #1 - Your first step will be to plot a travel itinerary based on the five works. I suggest you sketch a rough map or diagram of the places in the order of your proposed visit to avoid backtracking from place to place. When I have included maps on the image lists, I expect students to use them to locate important sites. While buildings will nearly always be in their original locations, works of art are often housed today in museums far from their original place where originally created. For example, a sculpture from ancient Egypt that is now be located in London.

Step #2 - Next, identify the five works as to artist or architect (if known, or culture if the artist is not known), name/title of work, period or style (if applicable), date, medium, and current location.

Step #3 - You will then need to write a couple of paragraphs to accompany each of the five works. Please focus on interweaving factual information with your personal observations, formal analysis, and references to elements and principles of art from Week 3. For factual information, you may use the image lists, museum online collections modules, Google Arts & Culture —the basics we used this semester. Please do not copy information from Wikipedia, or randomly google questionable sources and personal blogs.

Your text for each work should be sufficient in length to highlight the significance of the selected work, and your interest. This is not meant to be an intense research project. Instead, I am looking for your grasp and synthesis of the “big picture” of the works we studied, and how you can tie them together. And, remember—you need to impress your anonymous donor!

Information to include might focus on some aspect of the artist’s technique (e.g., use of impasto), the art historical significance (e.g., the first major work of the artist), associated terms (e.g., Pop Art), pertinent background regarding the artist or the person who commissioned the work, etc.—the type of information we covered for the various works. Do the works tell us about the artist and times in which they were made, and why they were made? In other words, flesh out your selections in such a way so that the paragraphs have meaningful content. Do not simply ramble to fill up space. Do not make up information, either. Focus on concise verbage and key points. And, of course, state why you want to see that work.

While grading will be based on content, try to present the information in a readable and logical format. Proofread your writing, and check for sentence structure, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. This is a formal submission, not a text message. Please submit your final writing in Canvas. Many of you have fallen way behind in keeping up with the required course content, so this is an opportunity for you to review that material. Do not expect a decent grade on the final if you spend only a short amount of time on it. I strongly suggest that you create a first draft of the final, and then go back several times to revise and enhance your final to ensure that it is your best work product possible.
