Description of Assessment 1: Essay
The purpose of this assessment is to evaluate your understanding of ideas, concepts and analytical frameworks related to how organisations define their operations strategy and set operational objectives to achieve operational excellence and competitive advantage, according to their specific processes and context.
The topics to be covered in the essay are those introduced in the first four weeks of the module. Therefore related to the following module content:

Task:
Write a 1000-word essay (excluding references), using the literature, concepts and frameworks that were delivered in the first four weeks of the module, addressing ONE of the following topics:
1. Critically analyse the relation, contribution and/or impact (including performance measures) of the operations function in organisations with/ to the Sustainable Development Goal No. 13 (Climate Action).
2. Some organisations have both high- and low- visibility processes within their operations. Critically discuss the possible benefits and disadvantages of having both types of processes.

For the selected topic you can use examples of different types of organisations within one sector (manufacturing or service sectors), and of profit and non-profit organisations, to evidence your knowledge and understanding of different transformation processes and contexts.
Guidelines:
- Provide evidence of your knowledge of at least two relevant frameworks and concepts covered in the first four weeks of the module.
- Critically engage with relevant academic literature and theories, augmented with your own thoughts and arguments.
- References cited must be listed at the end of the essay. Harvard referencing style is requested.
- Provide relevant examples where appropriate and use real-life cases.
- Word count: 1000 words (+/- 10%, excluding references).
- Essay format: in general terms, your essay will have an introduction, a ‘body’ with several paragraphs, and a conclusion. Do not use sub-sections.
