Excel Proficiency Exam, Chapters 1-3 You are required to demonstrate mastery of the skills presented in Chapters 1-3 in the SIMnet textbook for Microsoft Excel. You will do this by creating and formatting a workbook that you will use to track and analyze your scores/grades in BA131. This second of four Proficiency Exams is worth 300 points. This is an evaluation of your personal proficiency in the use of this software. The exam should be completed with little to no assistance from instructors, lab assistants, or other students. This is a test of your ability to read instructions carefully and apply the skills learned. You are responsible for using all related concepts and techniques presented in the Excel chapters in the online textbook as directed in the instructions below. The checklist below highlights the most important concepts, but will not cover all concepts presented that may be graded. You are encouraged to review the Excel chapters and the related Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) presented in those chapters. These may be reviewed in the online textbook by going to the LIBRARY link on the top of any SIMnet page. REMINDERS AND TIPS: Your completed Excel Exam workbook will contain four worksheets. A sample of the My Grades worksheet has been provided on page 2 of this document for your review. There are sample images throughout the instructions for parts (but not all!) of the other 3 worksheets. This exam has a start file - do not start with a blank Excel file. You should work on this Proficiency Exam over several days; do not attempt to complete it in one sitting. Use the blank ___ lines in front of each instruction to ‘check off’ what you have accomplished. Chapter 1 - Creating and Editing Workbooks 1. ___ From the Blackboard page where you found these instructions, open the start file named unformatted_mygrades_start_file in Microsoft Excel. From the File menu, select Save As and rename this file as firstname_lastname_excel_proficiency_exam.xlsx EXAMPLE FILE NAME: anna_johnson_excel_proficiency_exam.xlsx 2. ___ Go to Sheet 2 in the Excel workbook and follow the instructions on that sheet. Using the image on page 2 of this document as a sample, follow the instructions as presented in Steps 3-42 below to format and personalize Sheet1. 3. ___ Go to Sheet 1 in the Excel workbook. From the Page Layout tab, change the Theme from the default ‘Office’ theme to the ‘Ion’ theme. (SLO 1.4) 4. ___ Add your name to cell A1 then apply the Title cell style to this cell. (SLO 1.5) ___ Merge & Center cells A1 through K1. 5. ___ Merge & Center Row 2, Columns A-K. Merge & Center A3:K3 and A22:K22. (SLO 1.5) 6. ___ Apply Heading 1 cell style to A2 and Heading 2 cell style to A3 and A22. ___ Refer to page 2 to check that you merged & formatted rows 1, 2, 3, and 22 correctly. 7. ___ Apply Heading 3 cell style to A4:I4, A10:I10, and A16:I16. Do not apply to entire row! ___ Apply Heading 4 cell style to A5:I5, A11:I11, and A17:I17. Do not apply to entire row! Page 1 of 9 - Ba131_Excel Proficiency Exam Instructions_Windows_Sp21 8. ___ Merge cells in rows 4, 10, 16 so the Week headings are merged as in the image below. 9. ___ Apply a dark gray fill color to cells in columns A-K of rows 9, 15, 21, 29, 36, 43, 50 only. Move on to Step 10. You will make other formatting changes (e.g. colors) in future steps! Add Your Personal Data In the illustration above, you see a worksheet for a sample student. The blue numbers represent earned scores and red numbers represent the ‘yet to be earned’ scores for this student. The blue/red 0’s in the start file are placeholders for your own actual and estimated scores. 10. ___ In Rows 8, 14, and 20, replace the example blue zero cells with the points you have earned so far and the example red zero cells with scores you expect to earn in future weeks. Your Syllabus Quiz, Participation, Practice, and Proficiency Exam scores (blue points) can be Page 2 of 9 - Ba131_Excel Proficiency Exam Instructions_Windows_Sp21 found in Blackboard by clicking on the My Grades link in the course menu. Use your previous performance as your guide to replace the red zero scores with your estimated future points. 11. ___ In Rows 28, 35, 42, and 49 replace the blue and red zero scores with your actual and expected scores in SIMnet. SIMnet points already earned (blue points) may be found by clicking on the GRADES link on the banner at the top of the SIMnet screen. Do not use 100 for every answer unless 100 really is your personal average so far. For the red (future) scores, enter the points you expect to earn in future weeks. 12. ___ From the Page Layout tab, change the Orientation to Landscape. (SLO 1.8) 13. ___ Set the margins to Narrow. (SLO 1.8) Carefully study sample on pg. 2 to guide you through these steps [SLOs 1.4 through 1.8] 14. ___ Select A1:K56 and apply Wrap Text. 15. ___ Adjust columns A to J to column width of 14 for a balanced appearance (SLO 1.5) ___ AutoFit column K to fit the widest contents in the column 16. ___ In Rows 4 through 20, use two alternating Fill colors/shading to separate the Weeks of Blackboard assignments. For example, SUM is for adding, etc. 28. ___ Create a SUM function in J7 using cell references in a range which sums the possible Blackboard points from Weeks 1-3.
