Three problems, 12 + 2 (extra) points
Type your name on the upper-right corner of Page 1, in the format LastName, FirstName.
MY LAST NAME FALLS UNDER H~~~~ Z
For this homework:
Use Drawing tools in Word, PowerPoint, or Excel to develop the ERDs for all ERD HWs.
Problem 1 (4 pts). Given an entity TYPE – (a) UNIVERSITY (a table where each row is a university) for LName in A~G, OR (b) COMPANY (a table where each row is a company) for LName in H~Z,
(1) identify ALL relevant attributes (columns) for this entity type [6-9 columns];
(2) identify one to two distinguishing/defining attributes of the entity (that this entity type often has yet other entity types are not very likely to have);
(3) give ONE example (entity instance, a row) of this entity type.
Problem 2 (6 points).
Business rules, and ER diagram with cardinality.
? ? ? (TWO E-R diagrams total for this problem: one "original", one revised)
(1) Create business rule(s) for the given business scenario (by your LAST name: A-C, D-M, N-Z).
[How many rules? Think and check!]
You are FREE to make YOUR OWN assumptions – clearly state your assumptions. Remember: for each relationship, you need to state from both directions. These rules must reflect min/max cardinalities (the meaning must reflect; but please do NOT use the words "Min/Max", but “at least”, “or none”, etc).
(2) Based on the above rules, create the ER diagram (ONE diagram reflecting all rules) – that's the 1st ERD. [So far, ONE ERD will be done]
(3) Then make a (some) change(s) in biz rules that will lead to change(s) in cardinality (or even the relationship), and create the revised ER diagram [Now, the 2nd ERD].
You are assigned ONE problem (by last name) from the following:
Last Name Business Scenario
A-C 1. DRIVER receives CITATION, POLICE issues CITATION
D-M 2. TUTOR has APPOINMENT, STUDENT comes to APPOINTMENT
N-Z 3. CUSTOMER books RENTAL-CONTRACT, CAR is rented in RENTAL-CONTRACT
1) All entity types are in CAPS;
2) 2) No attribute except keys (PK, FK);
* * * 3) All relationships are already given; please do NOT “introduce” your own relationship (! ! ! ! ONLY depict what is explicitly given.)
Problems 3 (4 points, respectively). Coronel Chapter 2, end of chapter “Problems”: #17, 18, AND 19
Note: "Problems", not "Discussion Questions"
